Have a prob at the mo where it coughs and splutters as soon as i floor it. If i increase teh revs slow and steady without boost it runs fine.

I have checked the timing with a strobe as conzult was reporting wrong and no change...about to search on here for boost leak after i've pulled the coil packs and checked the plugs, but assume as she runs sweet at tickover and right up to 3.5 /4k revs with no boost that boost leak is the way to go...??

Any thoughts anyone?

Sorry if this appears to be a hi-jack of your thread fella but just thought i'd share my thoughts as you seem to have the same problem?!!

Hope you set the timing to what the conzult said? Thats what the ECU is trying to achieve.... What did conZult say?

Conzult was saying 21BTDC strobe was 15tdc. Reset TPS to .42 volts as it was low, re-did the idle (750rpm) and then adjusted timing with the strobe as it was showing nearer 20tdc after base idle and tps adjustment.

what sort of strobe did ya use, was it the clip on type where you pull back the arm and slip the tps wire inside of it

Yep if you let the clamp close it will read 10 deg advanced of what it should be for some reason....

H.mmmmm. Will try agian.

However do you think my issue sounds like timing then or have i thrown a red herring in by telling you about that...I will check it again in a bit after i've fed my face but do you not think it's more boost leak/ coil pack/plug/ fuel related then (based on stellaz post) ??

If the ECU is trying to achieve 21 deg at operating temp then something is wrong with one of the sensors...

Clamp closed forms a coil. It was open and accross the lower PTU wire rather than a cylinder/coil wire or tps..

Yeah you did it right then.. Next question is WHY the ECU is aiming for 21deg...

hmmm. And you mentioned sensor failure...what sensor...give me your thoughts bud as i'm scratching my head at the mo.

As i said i was going to pull coil packs and plugs next with the battery off so ECU then has to 're-learn'. My next port of call is to check for boost leak if this is still the prob...

This is all since the plenum and rocker covers came off a few months back for cam shaft oil seal replacement a second time by a 'former' trader garage/barn near swindon..:headvswal (originals were leaking post re-build ...as they were prob put in with a socket with the cams in situ:rant:) it's been running like this since but off the road since Jan as i've not had time to MOT her.

If you get stuck give me a shout, not sure I can help but will try, it'll be good to catch up as haven't met up for a while.

I have a wedding tomorrow afternoon but maybe sunday if i don't get it sorted. Thanks mate.

Can you do a screen capture of the full data monitoring screen once up to temp?

yep. that crap small laptop won't recognis emy USB stick to post up my conzult rezults!!!

Wedding tom and i'm ferrying passengers so tonight is my only free time as sunday is choca too and i want to drive it properly for a change!!!

>> Next question is WHY the ECU is aiming for 21deg..

it was probably aiming for 21 BTDC as the engine wasn't fully warmed up yet.

it's important you don't make any changes to base idle and ignition settings, before the engine has warmed up (>75 C)

in this case the coughs and splutters may be cause by a bad temp. sensor or loose/corroded connector..this would be my first suspect.

Next in line to check is the CAS connector

cheers guys.

was up to temp on all occasions.

i ran the conzult ona win98 (old laptop) so now waiting to get my diagnostic output screenshots off a floppy onto my other laptop or PC as the old one won't recognise my usb stick (despite having a port!) and i dont have the stick drivers. will post results later but think i need to re-set TPS and BASE idle as when i attempt to run base idle 'adjustment' or 'drop test' off the conzult the car cuts out so base idle is way too low.

will get mt results and comments posted later

Attached is the log file. As i previously suggested i think i now need to re-set TPS and Base Idle as per here. They were adjusted prior to timing, but the base idle was set too low i think and not brought up to 750 rpm. when you start is cold it sits about 500rpm. then when you blip teh throttle it idles at 1K.

I say that base idle needs adjusting again, because when i ran the the power balance tests, (latter screenshots) i had to get the mrs to hold the revs at 2k as if i click these functions the car just cuts out. (normally it drops slightly then compensates when in these modes).

Anyway, there is no screenshot as i had IT probs last night, but there are no fault codes.

Excuse the spelling (I can't edit word on my main PC as i don't have office 97 installed!) Comments preceed each screen grab rather than after them..(Cant edit each one to move them next to each pertinent screenshot for the same edit reason!)

Any advice much appreciated!

For a start the closed throttle switch isn't working - either bad connection or a faulty TPS. Its the connector on the front of the TPS, black one.

Secondly, the base idle is way out - should be between 650-700 when in idle adjustment mode. Only adjust this once the TPS has been sorted.

Cheers,

Andy

I've have the same problem for 10 months, backfires and splutters when you floor it but fine when you ease power on. Let me know how you get on with it please Damion because my mechanical knowledge is zero.
