Hi Guys and Gals, I'm hoping you experts out there can help me ? This is my first cry for help by the way.I've managed to cure both the error codes I had (13 and of course 34) but every time I give her a bit of toe even briefly the cat light comes on even on overrun. Can feel no misfire but does seem a bit less power.I have stopped and taken each coil pack off on tickover and every one firing o.k. Can anyone suggest anything please ? Starting to really pee me off. TPS voltage perfect but tickover slightly high(850)and cant get base idle any lower. N/A Auto by the way 1989 import approx 45,000 on clock.Sorry for long thread but trying to get as much over to you experts as poss. Thanks for any help Guys and Gals.X

I believe it is something to do with unburnt fuel, i'm sure someone will know exactly what it is :)

Cheers buddy. Was in Southport yesterday and last Wed. Know theres a few nice Zeds but not spotted one yet.Where you all hiding lol ? Seriously, I'm hoping someone can tell me if I need a new PTU or whatever before I start buying stuff I dont need ? Maz.

I'm afraid i'm far from an expert bud, however i 'THINK' that the cat light comes on because there is unburnt fuel burning up on the cat/exhaust. I have heard that before anyway, sorry i can't be of more help :)

Also bud what colour is your car? Cos my sister saw a silver one on the coastal road on sunday.

And you won't see my car at the mo' cos its being fixed, but you might see my dad's from time to time, his is standard silver with purple wheels (no thats not a joke )

Oh and one last note, i don't think you need to touch the PTU, as the PTU is for ignition timing i think. :)

Mine started doing it, just like yours when I booted it, couple of months later one of the catts went. not sure if it was related or not(might be that the catts arnt workin as they should and is letting more through than it should?). decatted it and all is fine now

The light is on because the cats are overheating which is usually caused by unburnt fuel getting into them.

Most likely to be either a coil pack is loose, bad plugs or a bad PTU.

Tighten up the coil packs and clean all the green corrosion off the connectors and it will probably go away.

If it's only doing it when really hot there's a chance it's the PTU.

My cat light blinks on and off very frequently.

I'm not too fussed though, becuase I don;t have any cats, so I'm assuming that the sensors are still under there somewhere and just earthing themselves out somehow. I'll sort it when I do my oil change this week sometime :).

But yes as mentioned already your cat light will come on when the cats are getting too hot, this could either mean they are getting clogged up and or you have excess fuel.

Get yourself on a Rolling road and get the fuel air ratio's measure so you can see if you need to modify your fueling. If all looks good on the dyno then you probably need to either replace you cats or get rid of them.

Disclaimer: removing cats is know to reduce the life of your oil seals on the turbo's. So it's recommended that if your turbo's have quite a few miles on them, do not remove the cats unless you intend to upgrade or replace the turbo's in the very near future.

Yep buddy that was me .I'm sure I'll spot you one day and your Dads is definately gonna stand out.:) The PTU by the way sends power to the coil packs. If PTU is dodgy,so is spark,so not proper combustion.Only thing I can think of now.Anyway thanks for replying.Appreciate it. Cheers Buddy.Maz.

Wouldn't removing the cats just cover up a problem of unburned fuel though?

Yes exactly!
