ok here's yet another ambiguous 'theres something not quite right with my Z' threads from my collection  recently there's been 3 different noises, all linked, coming from the old girl:

upon accelleration and boost, there's a feint rapid plastic'y farting sound coming from directly behind the steering wheel. i have a Profec installed near there, tho i know its not the noise that makes when holding boost (sounds fairly similar tho).

and during overrun, theres the same noise but much louder coming from the zorst, followed by a whistling sound like a stone's caught in the brakes (tho im not braking!). the car has also lost some power.

a virtual :smw: to the first guesser, lol

gaskets and or turbo failure

ggeeeeez that dont sound very positive.... he just had a rebuild about 200 miles ago doubt its that.

the same has actually happened before - to get onto my driveway i have to reverse diagonally up the kerb slope and i wonder if the twisting is buggering something up. when it first happened (about 4 years ago) im sure it was a boost leak too and it was fixed (cant even remember who fixed it!)

sometimes it happens all the time, sometimes it will stop happening and the car will feel really "tight" as in accelleration. sometimes its on and off, and under accelleration i can feel it stepping on (nice and tight :p ) and off (farty and like an Xr3i)

if its a boost leak, where is it leaking from?

I reckon your just paranoid dave, spent all that money and now you just listen for something!!-you'll soon be able to hear an ant fart!:D

if you can hear noise around where the boost controller is fitted, id start there.... sorry cant help any more

Its a zed ! start off fearing the worst and hopefully it can only get better, lack of power would be caused by a boost leak and it should also give over fuelling, squealing noise whilst not on boost does not sound good though, if its just been rebuilt check for anything that may be loose

pmsl! im not imagining things Darren. im not paranoid its just everyone thinks i am

Fry: its not a squealing sounds it a whistle under deceleration in gear.

Open the hood stand over the engine listen when running and get some one to turn the engine off, if you have a split hose you should be able to hear it as vacuum will suck air in through the split, if its only opening up under pressure and you cant find it, blank off the intake and pressurise the pipework to find leak, would start by checking all hoses first though.

Fookin hell M8 put some ear pl;ugs in the noise will go away....:D

If its whistling under de acceleration could this noise be the sucking of air in? Which might tie up with your possible boost leak? Blowing and sucking as it were at the same place?

Could be either clutch or brake booster diaphragms leaking ;)

ok ive had a nosey around under the bonnet and i couldnt find anything obviously wrong. ive taken some photos of things im not sure about - can anyone identify what's going on? also, how the eff do you reach the top of the clutch pedal? do you need to remove trim around steering wheel cos ive tried getting my head in the footwell and reaching up but couldnt feel anything up there! i need to feel around to see if theres a dodgy vacuum pipe up there somewhere!

Pic A - the rusty metal pipe in the centre of the photo. this is the driver's side. the passenger side one splits into two, and both ends are also rusted and don't go anywhere

Pic B - the small plastic pot in the centre with NABOO on the cap!

attachment.php?attachmentid=42216

Pic C - this pipe goes into the bulkhead and is a loose fit, although there's plenty of clearance in the pipe it fits over. the other end disappears under the throttle cover (the pipe that passes over the U of TURBO in the picture)

attachment.php?attachmentid=42217

Pic D - there's nothing plugged into the brake fluid pot here, and what looks like a matching plug is lying around in an area below. does it need to be plugged in. (ive had an auto->manual conversion - will this have anything to do with it?) Also, from what you can see of the balance bar, which of the pipes feeds the clutch/brake servos?

attachment.php?attachmentid=42218

Pic A - throttle body coolant pipe - redundant due to TB bypass

Pic B - Clutch fluid reservoir

Pic C - Thats the throttle cable not a hose

Pic D - Warning light connector for low brake fluid - plug back in

To eliminate clutch or brake booster leaks, plug the thick hose coming off the end of the balance bar (clutch), or plug the other hose (same thickness) that comes from the plenum just behind the balance bar (brake).

Cheers,

Andy

Oh and if you DO plug the brake line be VERY carefull when driving as you will have no brake servo assistance and will have to push the pedal pretty hard lol

ok Andy thanks for your help  when plugging the clutch or brake booster, would these be the best places to plug them as per photo?

Brake yes, clutch probably better at the other end of that hose :)
