Hi,

Any tips on removing a seized 17mm (now stripped). It's on the the middle section of the exaust so not much space. Tried heat and it's been soaked in WD40 but it still won't budge :(

Cheers

Vijay

Try Plus Gas, WD40 is useless for that kind of thing.

By stripped I presume you mean it now has no flats on it ?

Get it mega hot, and I mean glowing dull red, hammer on a smaller socket, maybe an imperial one, or a 6 point socket, or one of those 4wd sockets and then use an air impact driver.

If that doesn't work, grind it off.

If there is a branch of machine mart near you nip in and get http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/5-piece-bolt-grip-set

They are the best tools i ever bought for removing rounded and siezed nuts and bolts.....

These also saved my life on my tranny van recently, shame they are so expensive though, otherwise i may have bought the complete set.

Those bolt grip sets, do they work with stripped nuts as it doesn't say  and also, which set would be for a stripped 17 mm nut??

I'll get some Plus gas too. No room for an impact wrench and don't really wanna grind it off as it'd mean drilling out the old bolt/stud.

Cheers

depending on the room get a stilson on it, b very caerfull not to shear the stud though!!

what's a silson?

And how do nut splitters work, do you hammer then the end or is it a screw thread?

Yes they work with stripped nuts, i used them to removed stripped turbo/downpipe nuts on my zed, for the 17mm stripped id try the 16mm, they are great and barely need to be over the nut to grab....

Cheers guys, looks like I'll be getting some more tools then :)

Ordered some Plusgas, how long does it generally need to soak in, is overnight enough?

I once left mine in soak overnight and it came out all white and wrinklie ;)

Yep, overnight would be fine.

What a nightmare that was. The nut splitter didn't work as it couldn't fit flush on the nut cos of the exhaust. Been soaking the thread with plusgas since the weekend and it still didn't budge. Ended up using the 16mm bolt gip bit with an impact gun and it came loose :)

So thanks everyone for the tips.

interesting thread, I stripped one of the nuts while trying to swap out my back boxes today

Was quite impressed with the bolt gripper set although it's a shame you have to pay another £20 for the rest of the set :(

indeed, don't come on here much any more though evidently. Just sorting out the zed for an MOT then it will be for sale :(
