After having the Zed off the road for 3 years. I don't remember the brakes being that lame.

I want to do a full rebuild of my calipers as I supect that after 3 years of not being used they have got themselves into a sticky situation.

Any links to rebuild kits and some instructions on how to do it ?

Many thanks.

IIRC there is a caliper overhaul kit...i think MJP does it not sure how hard it is to do with standard tools...i'd think you'd probably need a vice

not sure if the rebuild kit is also suitable for the R33 calipers?

Stu,

If you still have the porterfield pads on there I'd recommend changing to DS2500. I found the porterfields don't inspire confidence

http://www.biggred.co.uk/ is where i got mine from. Quick service and competitivly priced.

I rebuilt mine about a month ago now and it seems to have improved things although i did couple this with a fluid chance, new pads and discs and also a set of braided lines. It was fairly easy to do.

Remove the metal clips around the dust seals first

I then used a set of mole grips to grip the piston around the top (where it contacts the pad) and twisted gently and pulled until they came free.

I then used some "brake cleaner" stuff in a can basically, to clean up the pistons, out side of the clipers and the cylinder bores (and removing the old seals from inside of course)

When i rebuilt them, I bathed the inner seal in brake fluid before refitting into the caliper and also rubbed brake fluid around the piston to make them easer to slide back in.

All of mine slid easily back in.

However one word of advice, i would not push them in all the way until you have refitted the dust seals, which can be a pain. And also the new clips can be very awkward to fit.

I have more than enough tools including a vice so hopefully I should be ok. I'll check with Mike.

Thanks mate, I'm gonna rebuild them as well either way as I can't help that feel after 3 yeas with no use they will be a little ceased if not totally. I'll get a set of DS2500 anyway as the portfields seem to have a little more squeal than most pads and I can't stand brake squeal.

Nice one thanks mate, do you also have the R33 set up or are your calipers standard ?

You can get an R33 calliper rebuild kit.

Got mine from Mike at abbey notor sports. It was the only place I found that would do them, or had them in stock.

You can email on Parts@abbeymotorsport.co.uk or phone on 01883-732331.

Good luck with it.

Thanks Darrell,

I'll check with them as well as MJP.

  • 1 year later...

Sorry to ressurrect an old thread but im looking at rebuilding my calipers, front and back.

I've looked at Quavey's recommendation of:

http://www.biggred.co.uk/nissanshop.html

and it shows that they have both the front and rear caliper rebuild kits.

My question is, are all rear calipers made by Akebono? I dont wanna order the repair kit for it to turn out i have a different kind of caliper.

Could be wrong but I think they are all the same.

good to see they are doing the backs now, when I did my front calipers they were only listing rears for a z31

nice on lads. thanks very much.

Just ordered both sets so im gonna be rebuilding a spare set of calipers i have lying about. :D

Blimey blast from the past! LOL Yeah mine weer spot on after I did them, although I only did the fronts :)
