I appear to have no spark at the plugs :(

I've changed my battery today, due to the old one only holding a short charge.. Fitted new dash cluster, DVD player, and seperate screen a couple of days ago, but had the car running since then.

The last time the car ran (couple of evenings ago) it felt lumpy on tick-over as if it wasn't firing on all cylinders, but revved ok.

I have taken a coilpack off today to check for a spark, and nothing :( The plug was very dirty (considering it's only done 700 miles running-in) and the plug was bone dry...But it turns over perfectly.

I have checked all the fuses in the engine bay, and drivers footwell & plenty of fuel in the tank.. Even reset the alarm immobiliser, just incase.

Any help/advice very much appreciated.

Thanks guy's.

Check for a ~5 volt feed to the PTU - pull the connector off and test the input side. The input connector is the one with 6 pins NOT 7. If you have a feed, sounds like you've been unlucky enoguh to buy dodgy replacement PTU but if you don't have a feed it's an ECU/big wiring issue. My money is on a second dodgy PTU :)

Cheers,

Vern

It appears I have a 0.04volt feed into the PTU .. This is just with ignition on, but not turning the car over, is that the correct way to test??

Thanks.

Yeh that's the right way to test it mate. That's the sign of a fooked ECU unfortunately! A replacement one should sort all your problems :)

Many thanks for your help with this Vern.. Very much appreciated mate

Tried a different ECU today, very kindly loned to me by BIGSSS (Steve)

Unfortunately, I still only have the same 0.04/0.05 volts registering from the PTU input plug :(:( and no spark at the plugs.

So far tried:

1. New battery..

2. Checked all the fuses I can find..

3. Tried a different PTU..

4. Tried a different Main ECU..

5. Checked the AFM connection..

6. Checked all the plug connections on the back of the dash cluster..

7. Checked the main earthing points in the engine bay & boot..

8. Checked the wiring connections & voltage supply to the fuel pump..

9. Removed all recently installed equipment, even though it was all working correctly..

10. Checked the ECU voltage output to the PTU - READING 0.04v..

11. Checked voltage at the temp sensors..

She was running OK one day, and wouldn't start the next day

The last time I had it running I had some pretty heavy bass running through my subs, obviously causing a thudding vibration through the car.. Could this have done anything

Any further advice very much appreciated

THANKS

I've got voltage at the temp sensor, next to the PTU, which also looks to be in the same part of the loom..

Would a conzult check tell me the problem, bearing in mind now, it doesn't look like it's the ecu at fault??

Anyone

THANKS.

now you know I aint no expert at this stuff... but if the car was running fine one day, a battery changed and you Fitted new dash cluster, DVD player, and seperate screen etc... could something maybe have shorted and screwed some electrical bits up?

Sounds electrical since you fitted all that stuff .... maybe a check by an auto electrician would do no harm...

or maybe I should just shut up :D

Thanks for your reply Athene, apprecited :)

I don't know whether it's just a coincidence that this electrical fault has occured since I fitted the dials and dvd player etc.

The thing is though, that I have had the car started half a dozen times since everything was fitted, and it started fine, then one day, no spark.

It looks like it's going to have to be an auto elctrician call-out :(.. I just wondered if a Conzult check would throw up the fault

The only other thing i can think of is a break in the wiring harness either to the PTU or the ECU but where to start is another thing.:(

What are the chances my ECU was fecked too? The car has been sitting without an engine for quite some time.

Thanks mate..

I just don't understand how it can happen, when the car is just sat on the drive.. I started it a few times after fitting the new bits, but didn't actually drive anywhere :(

As BIGSSS said - looks like you have the big wiring issue I said was a possibility. The next step is to check for a voltage at the ECU for output to the PTU. I'll try and post a picture ASAP but the wires you're looking for are the 6 blue wires that are about a third of the way down from the top with the ECU connector on the right (I think). I'll pull the floorboard and ECU in mine and see if I can get a decent piccy for you to show you the wires you're looking for but it might have to wait till tomorrow cause I doubt my camera will take a decent photo now. You need to get your multimeter and put the probe pointing into the ECU in one of the holes for the blue PTU wires. With the negative probe at any of the surrounding metal to earth it this will check if the ECU is giving a voltage out and it simply isn't getting to the PTU or whether the ECU is not giving out a signal.

Good luck!

Vern

I've managed to get a pic where you can actually see the cables to check. DSC00411.JPG In the pic the ECU had it's front on the floor. I'd unscrewed it and pulled the top of it to the floor (thought I'd tell you this to help you locate the wires more easily). The PTU wires are the 9th, 10th and 11th "section" from the top with the other 3 PTU wires underneath them. The wire colours on the top layer are blue and orange, blue and white, and blue and black. Testing any of them should give you a 3~5 volt reading. There's not really any need to check all 6 outputs because the chances are if one has output, they all do and it's just a break in the wiring loom stopping the signal getting to the PTU. Keep us updated!

Hope this helps,

Vern

That pic came out bigger than I expected lol. Well you can definately see the wires!!!

Vern

OK.. Many thanks Steve & Vern.. Your help is very much appreciated

I will do the check with my multimeter tomorrow, and let you know.

Many thanks again!!! :duffer:

Hi guys..

I have put my multimeter on the blue wires at the back of the ecu plug as directed, and I'm getting the same 0.04v reading :(

I cannot find one other thing that doesn't work on the car, everything works as it should, including all the recently fitted items, although I have pulled it all out again to start from scratch, even put my old dials back in just incase :( but when installed, it all worked properly, DVD player, screen etc..

The only other things I know are not working on the car is the speedo, and reversing lights, I believe down to a faulty speed sensor, or broken wire.. But the car has been running for a few months like this now.

I am absolutely stumped :( :(

HAPPY DAYS... NOT :(

Hi Ian, i just tested my ECU connections and i am getting 0.8v so i removed the main blue fuse (the one from the drivers side engine bay) and now getting 0.04v. Have you checked this fuse.

Will check Steve, just unplugging and replugging connections at the mo.. And my multimeter has just gone t*ts up, think it's overheated in the sun :(

Just had a look Steve.. And I don't have a blue fuse

It looks like someone at some time has replaced a fuse with a permanent bridge, and I bet that's where the blue fuse should be.. Right?
