I appear to have no spark at the plugs :(

I've changed my battery today, due to the old one only holding a short charge.. Fitted new dash cluster, DVD player, and seperate screen a couple of days ago, but had the car running since then.

The last time the car ran (couple of evenings ago) it felt lumpy on tick-over as if it wasn't firing on all cylinders, but revved ok.

I have taken a coilpack off today to check for a spark, and nothing :( The plug was very dirty (considering it's only done 700 miles running-in) and the plug was bone dry...But it turns over perfectly.

I have checked all the fuses in the engine bay, and drivers footwell & plenty of fuel in the tank.. Even reset the alarm immobiliser, just incase.

Any help/advice very much appreciated.

Thanks guy's.

Sounds PTU ish to me, check the connectors are properly located and check the spades, give em a clean with a small file. Is it a series 1, as they dont give any warning when they are going to die, check for green stuff on the blades.

LOL.. I don't even know what the PTU looks like, or where it is located :slap: :o

That's what I meant :nelson: I was in American mode earlier but yes, that's it. Check for shit connections and green shit and clean it all off

yea they are on the drivers side..

Hey mate yep that is a series one mine did this twice, disconnect the cables and re-connect them with after using some contact cleaner, be careful the ends an get brittle and break. Hopefully this will fix it but if it doesnt then see if you can borrow a known good PTU from someone or just buy a series 2 PTU and the conversion cable.

HTH

Cheers

I think alot of peeps upgrade to series 2 don't they?

What's the advantage of this?

They don't fail :)

Yes they do fail but IIRC they can be "repaired" and the S2 are more reliable

I take it the cars turning over on the starter?

Might be worth trying a different ECU.

Yes mate.. Everything else works as it should, it turns over nicely, new battery, PTU.. Was running fine one day, then not the next.

Haven't got anyone to borrow an ECU off, will have to buy one :(

Appreciate your reply ;)

If you want, my Z's off the road just now (no engine) i could send you mine Monday to try.

I had a spare ECU but gave it to a guy with similar probs but never got it back lol.

The only thing is its an auto but i think you can use an auto in a manual but not the other way.

Oh.. That's very good of you mate

I just hope whatever problem I have doesn't damage your ECU in any way :(

And I will give it back ..lol

No problem mate, PM me your address and i'll overnight it. In the meantime check the fuel pressure, pinch the feed fuel line with your fingers (just behind the fuel filter) and get someone to turn it over, you should be able to feel the pressure on the fuel line.

Just something else to eliminate.

Will do mate, thanks.. I will check the fuel pressure tomorrow.. It is a bit odd, as after turning the engine over for quite a while, the plugs were bone dry

I haven't heard the fuel pump kick-in recently either, but don't know if that's just because it's already up to pressure.

Check for a ~5 volt feed to the PTU - pull the connector off and test the input side. The input connector is the one with 6 pins NOT 7. If you have a feed, sounds like you've been unlucky enoguh to buy dodgy replacement PTU but if you don't have a feed it's an ECU/big wiring issue. My money is on a second dodgy PTU :)

Cheers,

Vern

I was driving friday and engine just cut out, turned key and engine turned over fast left it 10 mins it started and got me the 3 miles home im sure mine is a PTU issue goning to change it for a S2.
