She got pulled today! ****ers!

Yeah come on then, somebody start on about how it's a different matter when you need them! FFS!

Mrs Turbo was stopped this afternoon by plod(not traffic) and told that the front number plate on the MAC2 Stillen Beast is illegal.

Okey dokey, because it was just cut down to the size of the letters. Apparently you have to have 79mm letters surrounded by at least 11mm of plate. Speed cameras have trouble otherwise...that's a real shame!

So she gets a producer and 14 days to rectify the plate and I/she will have to prove that the plate has been done.

So a very mad Turbo woman goes to the cop shop tonight to produce. My Mrs says that the only reason why he stopped her is probably coz she was driving a modified sports car.

Desk Clerk looks to see who it was..."Oh that's Andy, yep that makes sense. Within 55 mins of him going on duty this morning we had four producers from him!" she continued...

"He loves fast cars and wants to be in Traffic but can't get in, he has four cars of his own!"

Great! Sits on the side of the road all day picking people up for pathetic and minor offences just to skeg the cars and probably the women.

I dunno! LMFAO biggrin.gif

Tossers...........

I got pulled for 83mph on M6 at 0300 and the "nice" policeman took great pleasure in informing me what a quality car I had.....

regarz

... this sort of shat reminds me of an article Clarkson wrote when he was testing the Escort Cosworth in Italy.

He is pulling 100mph or so on an Italian motorway and he sees the Caribinari piling up behind him - they drew alongside and Clarkson thinks he is in trouble but no! - they roll down the window of their patrol car and gesticulate "Faster Faster!" - they just wanted to see what the Cosworth could do!

Did anyone see the Gumball program last night?

'Haaey boary yew aint frorm rounnd these parts are yeh' ?

Just keep the plate, put a 'legal' one on for the cops, then change it back aferwards.

I cut my 200SX one down, so it's also illegal - nice to know it may stop me getting a speeding fine !!

I got pulled over becuase on the plate that came with the car the 7 was too close to the H by about 5mm.

But sorry to be a thorn but there is no reason to have an illegal plate. Firstly dont speed. Secondly if you are gonna speed, dont get caught.

timmi bud that same copper gave my m8 loads of stick there was **** all wrong with his motah but pulled him over anyway, was a real asshole with him!!

Cutting down the plate makes it smaller and therefore makes the car more aerodynamic. It also looks better in my opinion.

I don't PLAN to go too fast past a speed camera, but it could happen to ANYONE.

My 300Zx plate is also illegal because it has been changed from J30 ODT to J 300 DT

Thank your lucky stars she only got a V.D.R.S for it (vehicle defect rectification sheme, i think) Every time i get pulled up for my plate its a 30 quid fine.

Shit,

I was told that my plate is legal and it's cut down on the edges too. I especially asked that I wanted it legal when I had it made.

Do you get any points for doing this or just a fine?

lol Jez, I think we were told the same thing by the same person. If I get pulled over I just tell them extactly who put it on the car.

Vijay

You cant get points, just a fine as its a non endorsable offence, perhaps we should all drive round with no plates on and never get done for speeding! But we'd get alot of 30 quid fines!

I've just had Carnoisseur do my plates, told that the lettering isn't what the law dictates, but as the car's an import I can try the "previous owner" route.. but I've got the original plates under the boot carpet so I can produce those...

Evil people!

Stu have I missed something here mate? She wasn't speeding bud! She was tugged for the plate and that's it.

obviously pc plod hasn't anything better to do , like tackling the thieving car twockers and burglars etc so he picks on easy prey .... the motorist.

If a cutdown plate affects speed camera's, it must only be the hand-held type because all roadside ones take tyhe rear plate don't they ?

Most cutdown plates are only on the front.

SPECCS get the front plate and a mugshot of the driver in one hit mate. SPECCS uses character recognition back at DVLC but I was under the impression that if the computer can't fathom the plate, it gets rejected and looked at by an operator.

Laser uses the front plate aswell.

I was looking at some of the Billing pics last night. Saw an S2000 with a tiny plate, seen bikes with larger plates. LOL biggrin.gif

Ummm....how's that work then? The one's that I've seen are attached to a bleedin' great lump of metal...you know, the bit thats called 'the car'.....LMFAO

Nissan Technical Centre in Japan spend shitt loads of money getting the drag coefficient of 300's down to 0.31/0.32. They did this by NOT making the car the shape of a brick and covering it with carefully designed curves. A number plate does not have 'carefully designed curves', so the smaller you make it, the better.

Also, a smller number plate usually allows less restriction to air into the radiator/air intake for cooling and breathing of the engine.

Comprendez ?!

Bollox!!!!!!!

Nelson...I 'comprendez' fully....it is patently obvious that you don't. Look where most number plates are fitted.....you would gain a bigger performance boost by having a bloody haircut. Just look at a very basic book on aerodynamics, and pay particular attention to 'frontal area'.

Bitch fight.

frontal area remains the same big plate or not, flow is fooked by it, the bigger the plate the less smooth the flow and dragging turbulent air over a body just aggravates the fact, and there is quite a difference if the Cd is affected then the CdA is also affected, so keeping it small can be important, better still if you can blend the bastard in as I have done, then you get minimal effect on Cd/CdA and you are less likely to create turbulence as the air tries to find the Ics' etc.

On some cars the number plate makes little/no difference because the frontal area is flat and the plate does not extend over air intake areas.

On a Z, or a 200SX, however, this is not true. My 200SX is more aerodynamic as a result of me cutting the plate down and positioning it so that it doesn't obstruct the air intake. FACT. I would bet my house on this being true.

Also, the argument that a performance benefit is 'negligible' really irritates me.

Little would change if everyone took that view. If something's worht doing, its worth doing well. Nissan went to great lengths to reduce mass and drag in these cars, ANY improvement to that [providing it doesn't cause other problems] IS worthwhile, especially if it costs nothing. Perhaps the people advocating not improving the cars are simply wanting to justify to themselves that they don't want to bother, or be reminded that the car is fairly heavy. The designers of the suspension units in a Z, went as far as to take off 4.5 lbs in weight from the units - so my taking out 20kg (44 lbs) from the car by removing seats and rear blind etc. is a lot more and therefore significant. The fuel filler cap is NYLON FFS! I took the rear seatbelts out and they weighed 1kg each [4.4 lbs in total]

No, sorry....with a conventional UK plate located on the front of the vehicle centrally between the indicators there will be no discernable (i.e measurable)if the plate were to be removed entirely. Once speeds start getting above 40 or 50 m.p.h a pressure wave builds up in front of the object travelling through the air. The wave that is created by the front of the 300 ZX is virtually unaffected whether a plate is there or not.

Don't take my word for it.....ask your friendly neighbourhood aerodynamicist, once he/she has picked themselves off the floor I guess you will get the picture.

At the risk of being unduly pedantic I would also respectfully point out that it is the fuel filler lid that is nylon, not the filler cap.

A car is different things to different people....I love some of the modified 300's. I particularly like Mac's, John N's, and Kash's....but I couldn't justify (to myself) the level of expense and they just wouldn't be appropriate for me.

I know there have been various criticisms to your views on improving performance...I seem to recall someone pointing out that if you want to reduce weight you have a lot of weighty glass that could be replaced. There are always going to be differing perspectives (perspex-ives, groan). Personally the quest for more and more speed 'doesn't float my boat'...I like my creature comforts and, for example, I would find the removal of the seats unsightly.

I am happy to own a bog standard UK car which is perfectly adequate for my needs.

Anything that is basically a flat 'plate' plonked onto the front of an aerodynamic design will cause turbulent flow, turbulent flow saps power effects handling how well your wipers work in the rain and anything that keeps the flow laminar to the body is to be applauded.

The production of a bow wave is exactly what we wish to minimise, so smoothing the shape allows the air to be diverted around the object with the minimum of resistance, a clumsy piece of flat plate aint gonna help at all.

But in one respect you are right, the turbulent flow stems mainly from the shape not the size (within the limits of the largest and smallest plate dimensions) so blending in is still the most important aspect and the fact is a plate could be 600mm×112mm and so long as it is blended in correctly it would be 20× as effective as a 365mm×85mm just place on the nose without care.

You want the air passing a car to do 1 of 2 things - either pass over and around the car as easily as possible with as little turbulence as possible OR pass efficiently into the engine for cooling/combustion. The amount of air needed to pass into the engine depends on the speed you travel and I suppose the engine power. The 300ZXTT with the record for fastest front-engined rear wheel drive road car, has a quite small air intake to reduce drag - I think the high speeds ensure plenty of air would get into the engine for maximum efficiency.

For normal 300ZX's I assume the air intake has been designed to allow just enough air into the engine. Where there is no air intake, the body has gradual curves to smoothly direct air around/over/under the car. Nissan did not test the cars with any number plates on the front. Logic tells you they have a negative effect, both in terms of restricting air flow into the engine and increasing turbulence and drag.

Regarding weight reduction, I will admit that my desire to reduce weight is probably a bit of an obsession. It is not so that I will necessarily NOTICE any difference, it's just the perfectionist in me wanting to optimise things. I don't expect everyone to do the things I do, it's a personal choice. I was merely commenting on arguments put against my suggestions etc.

The argument about improvements being noticeable is one which I have come across regarding quality of a sound system. Just because you cannot DETECT an improvement, does not mean that it has not improved. The same applies to a car. Reducing Cd by 0.1 is probably not noticeable by a driver, but it makes the car better. The beauty of mass reduction is that unlike engine mods for > power, a mass reduction should improve your mpg, power-to-weight ratio and not affect reliability. The potential for mass reduction is probably minor on a 300ZX Z32 without spending loads of money or rebuilding the car, but BETTER is BETTER !!
