Hi all, I have 18" alloys on my zx with 245 40 18" tyres and after getting a slow puncture on front nearside tyre I found a large rip on inside of that tyre. It must have touched some part of the suspension and I would like to know is 245 wide tyres to wide and would 225 be better for front tyres.

I have 235/40/18 on my new wheels as that is what i am told is the best size. However tyre size depends on the width of your wheel aswell. 245 is a little wide for a front tyre btw. :)

what's the alloy width and offset?

PS I run 265 up front with no problem ;)

Quick question, cos i ain't that smart :wack: Why are you running such wide tyres at the front? I've only got 265 on the rear and they are pretty wide!

Proberbly down to wheel offset, poss lowering or poor jeometry. personally I think 245 is too wide for the front as it will aid more understeer. 225 make much quicker turn in and quite pointy 235 are a compromise of handling and wheel arch fill.

get rid of understeer and provides a better balance with the 285's at the rear!

it will aid more understeer.

get rid of understeer

So what does wider fronts do then, more or less understeer?

I saw some proper ferrari wheels the other day and the rears were about 265, but the front were like bloody saxo wheels  Surely there is a reason Ferrari but narrow wheels up front.

wider fronts = less understeer. I know a lot of the track racing guys in the U.S / Aus use wide fronts too.

I used to have 245's on the front and was very happy with them. Did'nt suffer with any tramlining issues either.

admittedly mine are towards the extreme side of things :)

the ferrari's are mid engined so less weight at the front so don't need as much tire

Same here 235 front + 265 rear on my 18's

I have 245 fronts and they are stretched over the rim. I am reluctant to go any bigger. I have 285 rears, but my rims are 9J fronts and 10J rears. I do not get any problems with the steering or rubbing.

Thanks for all the replies, I bought the zx back in november with the 18" rims on it and covered about 50 miles since then so damage to tyre could have been done by last owner. Plus ofside front tyre is undamaged, will take nearside wheel of tomorrow and check it out and find ouy width of rim but I think a narrower tyre on the front would suit better, will keep you posted.
