Hi,

Just wondered does anyone have any sort of idea what warranty I should expect for a bare metal paint job with regards to rust? Basically my car has sat there with no paint, it's finally being sorted but I want some sort of warranty for rust.

On cars as old as ours I'd say none mate.

If any rust began to show through, the body shop would just claim that it must have been lurking underneath all the time - given the age of the car it would be hard for you to prove otherwise, even if they did a bare metal respray. Also they have no control over how you store the car, or under what weather conditions you drive it.

Unless of course you got them to sign a statement beforehand saying the car was totally mint and rust free when they started..........;)

Although, if any rust began to show through the paint after a short time - say within 6-12 months I'd take it back and complain, they may repair it at a discount or FOC if you are lucky.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Thing is because of their crap sprayer and then the endless people letting them down, my car has sat in a damp garage since August with absolutely no paint, they have to take some responsibility :(

You thought about just buying another shell? The amount of work to remove all the surface rust will take ages and who knows what untold damage lies in the seams etc.

Have you thought of having it etched primed first, its a coating that gets into the surface of the metal helping to protect from rust. You'd need a strip car as im sure it has to be baked ! I had a Triumph Gt6 done like this,it lasted 24yrs before showing signs of rust.

not really an option as all the kit is fitted up.

It will be etch primed but I'm sure as Si mentioned, the rust has to be dealt with before the etch primer

cant u take it elsewhere?

not been as easy as that, had a few other people look at it and had various excuses and stories for why they wouldn't/couldn't do it. It's gonna be painted with a few weeks but just need to cover the rust query.

Surely there must be a spray version of rust proofer that is put on before the primer, is there not ?.

I know what you are saying Vijay, I'd want some sort of warrenty as well.

Well we got hold of some stuff from Frosts which is a rust converter and works a treat when tried it but I guess it's there decision whether to do the whole car in the stuff
