I've had my dash apart fitting my led converted dials and found this white box tucked up in there with a fair bit of wiring in a nice little roll. It connects to a 'button' which I've been pressing for a year wondering what it does but never figured it out!

The cabling seems to be cut and not goin anywhere apart from one end at the button....which you can see to the right of the ignition...

So...does anyone know what it is??

i think it must be part of an alarm or something. thats aftermarket.

thing is...the button doesn't do anything and I've got an immobiliser fitted and working already...!!

Think it would be safe to remove? Its not in the way at the moment but excess 'junk' i guess...

It's got a relay on the PCB so it must switch something but no idea what.

Where do all the wires go?

Doh just read they're cut!

Nowhere! One end is attached to the button and the other end is cut! In between is maybe 1 - 1.5metres of wiring bundled up and tied together!!

Which is why I'm sure it doesn't do anything right now...but what DID it do and can I get rid of it?? Although may leave the button as would leave a hole in my dash!!

does the small black chip have the numbers 555 on it ?

Don't remember seeing that on it but can check tomorrow.

Why? What would it mean??

could be a flux capacity........ and its set to feb 2000.......

lol....I WISH!! I'd get the dial set to the early 80s sharpish though...relive the childhood when common sense was still the height of popular culture! Bllod rules and regs now! I digress....

im 99% sure its a timer module going on what it says where the connections are. ive seen things like this before. looking at the way the wires are, i would say that it was a total closure unit for the windows, with the switch on the dash giving you the option to turn the module on/off.

For the windows? As in it will close windows after a certain time??

it would originally have been connected to the total closure trigger wire from the alarm system so when you armed the alarm, it would close the windows.

Maybe for the ejection seats?

Ive got a strange aftermarket looking switch in my import. A green light comes on when i press it, nothing else. Very mysterious.

it does that now! Maybe just the old system left in there when the new was fitted...?

you may as well remove it as obviously its not doing anything if none of the wires go anywhere.

It's a timer module. The company that makes it (T K Consultants) make timer module and relay modules. There should be a variable resistor on it somewhere to set the time delay. The 8 pin chip is probably a 555 timer which is the chip everyone seems to learn about first when you're studying electronics.

As to what it does....... if i had to guess i'd say it was probably being used as a simple turbo timer and the button probably is a manual override if you don't want your engine to run on after for 30 secs or whatever.

ahaaa...thanks hairdo! So...now I know (sort of) what it does...is it worth keeping/reattaching?? I've got a boost controller but no turbo timer! I generally tend to drive calmly for the last few miles if I've been out on the loud pedal so woiuldn't think I'd really need one...
