hi all

firstly let me say what a good site!

ok now to business!

yes i am seriously thinking of getting one of these supercars as i will be doing little milage soon. for you a few queries.

1 i am losing my company car so have no bonus and am 43 so what is a guess on the dreaded insurance. i have no convictions...

2 i am a competent amateur mechanic with a garage full of idle tools and in 25 years have split and rebuilt more bikes and cars than soft-mick. however the under hood situation looks daunting to say the least. are they reasonably reliable even though they look complicated?

3 the 300zx does not seem to rust or am i being wishful in my thinking?

4 i cannot see the difference between the swb and lwb 2+2:cry: they all look the same. i wish to know IF i take the plunge, which is the best one i can get and how much is it realistically worth? i say this as there seems to be swb/lwb : import/uk : tt/na : manual/auto : tweed/velvet/leather ; targa/hardtop/convertible !!!!

thanks for taking the time out to read this and in anticipation opf any comments...

Hi

if you are lucky enough to get a good one they are reliable, mine has not really let me down in 3 years

as for rust, the UK ones are approx 18 years old, they will have rust unless looked after very well

mines a jap import with slight mods at 700 fully comp insurance, 28, 8 years no claims

I cant see the diff between the lwb and swb either but those that own a swb will give you the run down on the pros and cons!

Give one a go!!

Right wellllllll.......

to answer a few q's yes they do rust, uk one's will look to be in worse condition than import one's of the same year, reason being japan uses volcanic ash instead of salt of the roads.

Insurance... well how longs a bit of string... i'm 28 live in London, drive a TT import and it cost me £500 full comp.

LWB easiest way to tell is the petrol filler cap is behind the rear wheel, SWB is in front of the rear wheel, main difference is SWB has 2 seats LWB has 4, uk spec only came in TT LWB, hard tops only came in SWB, as did convertables and they only came in NA form, apart from the few that were converted.

There are as reliable as they are looked after, if you look afrter it it will be reliable, but remember most are 15 years old now, so dont expect nothing to go wrong... cos it will and can be expensive to put right, there are only a few ppl i would trust to work on my car, and they are members of this club.

Any thing else ask away. ;)

It takes a while but after owning one for a few months youl be able to tell the difference between them right away, lwb look alot longer  and will be more stable round corners at high speed but struggle round the shorter bends, swb will be more responsive round the shorter bends and less stable round the longer faster ones :D oh and they are lighter so faster acceleration and braking.

what he said^ proper little pocket rocket, but i like the LWB for the GT driving

IMHO they are all good cars. its up to persomal pref and what your using it for.

not that dear to insure.... 31yo 0 no claims 9 points £ 650 (fully declaired)

good luck bud, hope you get one:duffer:

hi

thanks for the replies...

it looks like i will look at lowish milage imports (less rusty) and definately lwb and definately automatic (lazy) then....

however the guides on here say to bring a friend with them so they do not buy an obvious "dog" so IF i were to take the plunge would i be able to call upon a knowledgeable chaperone from this site:bow:

i do not trust dealers having been dicked in the past and would probably plump for a members car....

oh as to the insurance, i have had a company car for 3 years which will soon be gone. if i type in no bonus on the autotrader search i get 2600 pounds. if i can find an insurer to accept my previous 9 years ncb and 3 years incident free motoring i get 420

thanking you in anticipation

Try http://www.bell.co.uk ;)

You ought to be able to get classic insurance, I think I paid about £170 last time.

Welcome to the nut house buddy.

Good decision on buying a Z and going for one from the forum. At least you can look it up on here and people will know what problems it has had, if any.

Take your time otherwise, don't just settle for the first one you see, unless of course it is a minter.

As for reliability, they are as reliable as any 18 year old car that will do the performance stats that these have.

Best bet with the insurance is to shop around as well as they seem to vary by area and not just person. If you do a search you will find lots of threads about it.

Good luck finding a good one.

yeh thats right, thats what im doing nxt year

on my classic policy you need to own a second car, im paying 280 fully comp on a 7000 mile policy

If i was buying again there would only be a few changes I would make, if I was to buy a auto I would also invest ibn a shift at will kit and traction control, if I was buying a manual it would be a 96 onwards as the gearbox internals are supposed to be stronger, whatever you buy, carry out a FULL service irrespective of how the previous owner looked after it, I would also carry out the 60k service as well, have a good pot of money for anything that goes wrong put asside.
