I work on the Railways.

I am SMTH? Signal Maintenance Tester. The 'H' stands for Handbook.

This in turn (with my company) makes me a team leader.

What does it all mean? I am certified to test, maintain, install and fault find Railway signalling equipment such as signals, points and all other electrical stuff apart from the traction electricity (that powers the electric trains).

Its quite a responsible position so the stress levels can be quite high at times especially when working to a time limit as since the Railways were privatised any delays to trains can cost the maintenance company thousands of pounds.

The first thing I listen for is the area. Once I have established that it isnt mine I relax. Everything I test I have to sign off. That is my responsibility for 5 years or until someone else signs after me it then becomes theirs. Since the Clapham Common crash the grade of SMTH was introduced because that was caused by a live unsecured wire that touched the wrong terminal at the wrong moment and set a red signal to green. So as far as signalling is concerned the Railways are very safe. Signal wrong side failures are more or less not possible these days. :D
