Did anyone here watch the meteor showers last night?. Sat in my garden around 10.30pm last night with a few drinks and watched the display. Saw at one point up to around 4 burning up per minute!, quite spectacular if this stuff interests you!.

I'm off out tonight 'pubbin' it with a friend in the zed so might go out & find a countryside pub out in the 'sticks' were the sky is black and not orange as it is around here!.

Yep saw a few, actually saw quite a few satellites as well.

It bloody clouded over here about 8:00 pm after being cloudlessly sunny all sodding day.

 

Cloudy now too so is likely to be tonight, it lasts for a couple of days, so may be lucky. Was the same for the Leonids too, not long back.

 

Have seen MIR (before it was ditched) and ISS a few times one with shuttle attached, really bright. There are a few realy good resources and programs on the web where you can chose a satellite adn it then calculates where and when you'll be able to see it from your location.

Yeah, I saw the space station with the shuttle attached to it I think was late last year?. Flew almost directly over my house, quite an impressive sight.

The Space Station does, or did, look large in the sky when it was up there. I saw it too. It was bigger than and 10 brighter than Polarus in the sky so it stood out a lot.

 

I have quite a large telescope here and its amazing some times having a look at the stars with it. You can see the rings of Saturn, Jupeters moons and ring, yes it has one, only small. I actually saw it through my telescope first then had to look around to see if its true. I have seen Andromida and Orion's Crab Nebula, which is my favourate. I will stop talking like a geek now

I have a telescope too (Xmas pressie) and I was surprised when some of those bright stars turned out to be planets with rings around them etc. All of a sudden the Patrick Moore phrases like "you can clearly seen jupiter in the easter sky" etc started to make sense.

Stuart, have you seen the horsehead nebula in orion, fantastic sight.

Hoping to get myself a Meade reflecting 'scope when I get the time!.

I dont think astronomy is a geek thing myself, as there are some beautiful sights to be found up there.

Many a long night I was out side in winter, best time to do it, till about 4am. Point my telescope at the 7 Sister, and there are thousands of stars there when you look and not just 7 as what you think you will get. I love it.

 

Where is the Horsehead Neb, Tony? I dont think I have seen that one.

Stuart, its in the belt of the constellation of orion . You wont be able to see it until late autumn/winter time.

When all the planets were visible at the same time and near each other, I saw Jupiter and all it's moons wih only a friend's birdwatching telescope !

I saw a Golden Shower once! Most spectacular, I said to the girl "I can see the ring round Uranus!" as the night sky lit up with pure gold!!! Twas exquisite and so pleasing to the naked japs eye!!!
