Sounds strange but we're viewing houses as we're planning to move asap and one of our (i mean the mrs.) main criteria is that the garden is south facing so gets the sun:rolleyes:....

I've been told that a good way to tell (if the agent or owner doesn;t know) is to look at the location of the sateliite dish as they always face south....

Can anyone confirm that this is true or have any other ideas (other than taking a compass with me of course!)

google earth the properties your interested in? you could shortlist houses without even leaving the house that way ;)

1. Take a compass

2. Look for the green mouldy stuff on fences and trees etc - that will always be on the north side

what about the north facing satellite dishes?

LOL always thinking outside the box!

LOL

OK I'll clarify for the picky ones on here!

Sky dishes point south south east and that's probably 99% of the dishes in the UK.

Some other crazy bearded types do have motorised dishes and point them at other satellites to watch foreign crap! LOL

sun rises in the east , sets in the west ...think where the points of a compass are

and relate to the suns position and you have south ..........

Any geostationary satellite will be in a generally southerly direction when viewed from the northern hemisphere as they are all parked above the equator on various lines of longitude. I generally use this site when Im doing a new access as it is fairly accurate and can also be used (offline) when there is no internet access. All you need to do is know where you are (GPS) and know where your bird is (internet) put in the figures and out pop your look angles.

Thanks all for your helpful & bloody funny replies ;)

Go a lunch time and the sun will be in the south :)

Actualy, I've just realised how stupid this is - why base your decision on buying a house on how much sun the garden will get? We never get any anyway!!!

I have a south facing back garden and it's bloody lovely in the Spring and Summer, spend oodles of hours in the garden, my front garden is north facing and only gets some sun early morning (I'm never awake to enjoy it)

Also in the long summer evenings , sitting in the south facing garden is bliss, especially with a beer in your hand!

EXACTLY! :cool::duffer:

check which way the birds fly in winter! dont they all fly south?;):D

I'm sure Sky dishes actually face morer SE than south.

IMO the best back gardens face SW. You get the sun from mid morning but don't lose it until late at night.

iff you cant find south then find north and its the other side of that:x: in the old days when houses had food pantrys they allways put them facing north (coolest)

Easy Airport Access :nana2: :rofl:

If you go to view the house then look in the sky. If the sun is out stand in the garden and look up. You will see if the garden gets any sun. :rofl:

FPMSL :rofl::rofl::rofl:

go there at 12 O'clock. If the suns toward the bottom of the garden, its facing south. Moss will be on the back wall and the compass will point that way, also if you google the post code it will show you the orientation as ALL maps run N-S

common this is a no-brainer.
