help!!

after hving my car get a little warm last week then when i stopped it made a kinda hissing noise followed by a woosh! (honestly, no hollyhocks tho)

opened the bonnet and had a load of steam (smelt of coolant) come up from by the brake master cylinder, autobox dipstick area.

I thought that the heater matrix hoses had failed so removed them, inspected them (they seemed intact but one had a large bulge at the end and the other was split on the end behind the jubi clip) and ordered some new ones from Mike.

Fitted them last night and went out for a little spin everything seemed ok.

checked the levels this morning and topped up the water (i expected to have to do this cos of the airlocks) for half hour as norm after any work on the cooling system. lol

i then got in to do a 25 mile drive, all was well until about 3/4 of the way throught the journey i pulled up and noticed steam again!! from the edge of the bonnet, my gauges were fine no increase in heat so was very confused.

turned on the heaters just in case and gently limped to my destination, opened the bonnet when i got here and...... nothing, no steam.

Listening intently i could hear a gurglin noise that appeared to be coming from just below the master cylinder on the enigine side but more towards the top left corner of the engine (if you were looking from above directly down with the nose of the car pointing south)

I am stumped and more than a little stuck, anybody local to me (car is in Littledean in the forest of dean, gloucestershire, GL14 3LL) able to help me out or any ideas or anything.

Well annoyed cos she has been running beautifully for some time now and then Pow!!! dirty hands time again.

Hope someone can help :( have tried to contact Greg cos he put the engine back in the last time and kinda knows my car but dont know if the number i have is current. if anyone has his number or will be seeing him can you pls ask him to get in touch (my phone number is on the post entitled **urgent** lol.)

Many thanks in advance, heres hoping one of you lovely wonderful skilled fellow enthusiaists can help a fellow zedder ...

it will be the little pipe above the bell housing, its a pain in the arse but it is do-able without takin the engine out, have a look on markzx's ride pics he has a pic of the rear of the engine its the red 1 in the middle of the block, hope this helps.

had a look and it seems that its comin from the drivers side above the turbo, paul at swz seems to think its under plenum pipes i am lost tbh its very annoying

that red pipe is on the wrong side bud, unless theres one on the driver side too..

Alright Liam, long time no see!

Right so, heater matrix pipes are they seated correctly, i had a similar problem when one of the pipes hadnt seated properly and would occasionally spit out a bit of steam. So youve got steam coming from the drivers side at the rear of the engine bay. Did you have the plenum water bypass done when you had the engine rebuilt? Other than that i cant think of any other water pipes that run round that side of the engine

am thinkin now that maybe i didnt, but dont know enough about the engine cooling to know where it could be coming from, its deffo from the area i said tho. i have found a rubber pipe that goes to the turbo which when i prod it feels very squishy dont know if this is water or not..

really need it looked at by someon who know what they r doin but cant move it obviously.

its well frustratin

lol Hi nick hows things btw :)

from what i can see they are the only pipes apart from the matrix pipes that sit around that area, i suppose it depends on where the pipe is split, i.e if its at the top of the pipe it will come from the D/Side but a split at the bottom could make steam come from the P/Side

you can pop down to mine i can cast an eye over it but were booked solid for the rest of the coming week so it would be a quik look over based next door to halfrauds in glos

Sorry to change subject slighty, had coolant water leaking into passenger footwell. Coming from air duct.I assume heater matrix. I have the dash out and the cross bar but still cant see how it comes out, havent drained system yet but know i have to.

Can someone help please,or even better come help me,live in Chelmsford.

Liam it will be one of the turbo coolant hoses. Not difficult at all to replace, both are no longer than about 4". Just get some 8mm id silicone hose and replace both, job done :) You will see them just to the rear of the compressor outlet pipe

andy if i look at the drivers side tub, there is a pipe which comes down from the back of the block onto a metal pipe into the turbo is this the pipe you mean?

its secured by 2 squeeze together spring clip type thing??

Thats the one bud :) There is also another one that runs to a plenum cooling hose just behind the PCV hose/valve. Not too difficult to replace if you have some good long nose pliers ;)

  • 5 weeks later...

Sorry to drag this post up, but was it the turbo hoses ?.

I have a very sinilar problem with mine just after the engine build.

Is it easier to do this from above or below ?

lol, similar here too. shortly after my build i had coolant problems. turned out it was the front water pipes going under the plenum, but i still get a gurgle from beneath the engine now and then, sounds like AIV gurgle but my aivs were removed.

The gurgle is probably air trapped in the pipework from the leak, water out = something needs to replace the space i.e. air.

Had the same gurgle comeing from the water pump area after the engine was switched off ad after the leak.
