any of you PC boffins hep me out.

I've been running 2gb of RAM on my MOBO ( ASUA A8V delux) with no probs .

all in the right slots etc.

I've just put another 2gb of the same RAM ie make , speed etc.

and now the MOBO still only shows 2gb

Even a BIOS update didn't fix it

The RAM is 4 x 1gb pc3200 400hz dual

Seems to be a few similar problems that people have reported, some have suggested reducing the memory clock speed from DDR400 to 333, apparently that is possible with certain BIOS versions. Some people also talk about increasing the memory voltage slightly.

The manual lists only certain manufacturers memory as being 'qualified' for use - suggests to me that it could be sensitive. However, all the ons in the list are 512Mb, presumably becuase the manual/mobo are a couple of years old.

I have had that in the recent past and it turned out it was the PSU not giving enough juice - solved with 400watt PSU.

Bah easier to have hands on contact with said faulty box.

Didn't see he was running new bios.... I went into ANAL-ytical mode... lol Computers.. my living... scourge of my life.. 24/7/365.. :( lol

love 'em hate 'em :headvswal great when they're working crap when people ask you to fix them :D if all configs with all modules tried and no more than 2gb recognised and the manual does say 4gb in 4x1gb array looks like an asus email is in order

yeah i've sent them one, PSU is 520w or more can't remember but i did put a powerful one in

AndyP - Just realised i missed a whole lot out of what I was saying (bloody vmware)

Anyway in relation to what you were saying - Some boards force 333MHz if the PSU is not giving enough juice.. and of course lower clock speeds, but the machine will still function as normal yet not report correct RAM in place.

they are cyrstal ones, got them from danny ages ago

do they have holes in the outer section for bulbs (yours being jspec) or are they blanked off?

looks good was wondering what to do with the holes though. stumped on the ram will keep an eye on this post for outcome hopefully asus will be aware of this issue already

They should work at 333mhz. If you want to run them at 400 you'll need to get single sided DIMMS.

Chris,

I looked at my Mobo and it's not identical to yours, it's an A8V-VM(SE), so not sure what you may/may not be able to fiddle with in the BIOS.

looking at most of the info on the net the A8V doesn't like dual memory, they say if you increase the voltage to them it should help. the only thing is i can't find anywhere to increase the voltage.unless i'm blind, i can't see it in the bios settings

RAM spec

Specifications:

Non-ECC

Double Data Rate architecture

Data Rate: 400MHz

2 Banks to be operated simultaneously or independently

Bandwidth(max): 6.4GB/s

Operation: 2.5 Volt

Connector: 184 pins

I never personally got on with ASUS because after 4 motherboards i finally got one to work, then after 2 years BIOS got corrupt (long story short).

Just a short question to resolve a few issues, sorry if they have already been answered.

Have you tried just the New stick of ram and taken out your old ram?

Tried different slots?

How much does the memory does it say it has in the

BIOS (basic input output system) / POST (power on self test) screen?

You can go to http://www.crucial.com who sell memory. They have a test facility on the site to see how much and what sort of ram you can run.

May be worth having a look.

Darrell

i'm using XP pro. whats a benchmarking tool

It's a program you can install that runs tests on your PC and gives all sorts of results. There are quite a few downloadable for free. If your RAM is working, it should be significantly faster (give better results) with all of it than with half of it.

Sometimes they hide the settings away, on my board I have to press CTRL F1 or something in BIOS to open up the settings. Then you'll see the ram voltages. Have a read on the net. My ram recommends 2.1v but I've had to up it to 2.2v to get 4 1gig sticks working.
