Any Cad designers Here ? help needed to start poss training

Right here goes I've been in the wood trades joinery, furniture/cabinet manufacture & design etc etc for 20 years. I have just started a premiere construction for one of the uks annual top events. Prior to commencing the build I was taken to a meeting to one of uks top metal fabricators who were draughting the drawings for the site plan as they are involved heavilly also. The CAD design team have inspired greatly me to the next route in my life I would like to take without question this is where I want to go next as I have done all I can within my trade just about to test me.

How, where what do I need to do next anyone guide me. I will be talking to the CAD designer who also was in the same trade as me prior to his current position about his step to where he's at.I am computer literate and pick things up quickly. Any advice would be appreciated

the system I saw staggered me you actually build (without building) the product and can pick it up spin it round globally just by lifting a finger I was truely gobsmacked :slap:

As long as you have an understanding of the drawings then you halfway there. The bulk of the work will be learning how to draw the parts using the different functions, once you are shown and start doing it yourself then it's a case of practice. I have done basics, a friend loaded a package onto my pc and f**k me it does everything. Draw it, 3D graphic it, rotate it, even test the flow rate through it! Once you get the hang of it you'll be away.

Well the first stage would be to see what package they are using and 'obtain' it for evaluation purposes :D

I use AutoCAD quite extensively, never been to college for it but can quite happily produce 2D & 3D working drawings :)

This is a press tool I did for the CERN Project (google it ;))

:) Good Luck!

Awesome mate, don't quite think I can manage that on Solid Works yet!!

:duffer: Cheers.

Practice makes perfect though. After using the software for a while you get to know shortcuts that make the job easier/faster. You also have your way of doing certain 'things'. Sounds daft but it's hard to explain :mac1: :D

I really enjoy doing cad work, for the simple reason before cutting any metal, you know whatever is drawn is going to work. No trial and error. The trial and error has been done on the PC beforehand.

Here are a couple more. First one is a hydraulic planish and pierce machine, second is another press tool for cropping and piercing tube ends for the automotive industry.
