Guys,

Can anyone forward the email with full headers to bruce@netpd.com and I will see what I can do.

I can't believe it but this has happened to me as well this morning - from both of my OWN e-mail addresses ?!!!! How the hell do they do that?

Grrrrr ....

Danny

firstly guys, DO NOT go making assumptions about who you think might be doing it, because this thing happens all the time.

The fact it might coincide with a disagreement you have with someone is purely bad timing.

Once your email address is on a list, then you can never get it off, you have to change it to make stop them coming in for a while...

This happened a while ago, remember ?

Periodic bulk mail shots are the norm for these people.

the fact that they can send email from your own address, and from your own domain means that there are some VERY BADLY configured mail servers around, particularly AT YOUR ISP !!

A good start would be to have go at them and ask them how you can receive mail from yourself / your domain, and to make them sort their own security out.

You have to forward them the headers from the email too, so that they can also contact to the originating network. This will have more clout from them than you, unfortunately.

Just a couple of points - and apologies to the techies who already know this but I thought it might be helpful to less techy bods like me.

This sort of spam goes on all the time and there isn't much you can do about it. My in-box was fairly free of this until I swopped over to Outlook. My work e-mail is virtually spam-free (going back 4 years or so). But when I changed to Outlook - whammo - spam by the truckload.

So 1) if you're not using a Microsoft client, you'll probably be better off and don't convert to Outlook unless you really have to.

2) and 3) use a good virus checker and a good firewall (this latter especially if you're on broadband)

4) Be paranoid (a) if you get e-mails from an unknown source, be suspicious. Delete if too paranoid.

Some viruses can now get into your PC, read your address book (esp if Outlook) and send infected e-mails with either you or one of your contacts' details as sender.

So 5) Be paranoid (b) even if the mail seems to be from someone you know, if it looks odd, delete.

6) Oddness - free offers, exclamation marks!!!!! your personal invitation etc etc If it looks like spam it probably is. Delete.

6a)If it says "this is not spam" it is. Delete

7) Never ever click on the link which invites you to unsubscribe. That just confirms that your e-mail address is 'live' so they will use it more.

8) There is a lot of automated spam. They look up domain names - a matter of record - and then invent names to go with it. Just by starting at (say) aaaaaaa and working through to bbbbbbb (eg) so they will spam you even if they haven't got your name. Until you reply - then they do.

So be paranoid, get protection and delete anything you're not certain of. DON'T click on any link whether to unsubscribe or not.

What was the IP of the mail that was sent to you? You can find it in the header

Stuart

following on from Gio's post...

if you have any mail client program that displays HTML email, including images, then make sure you go offline when you read your mail. (annoying, but necessary)

Any image in the mail that is LINKED NOT ATTACHED will confirm your email address to the sender

any mail that appears to be general non offensive spam from someone, but is html including images, should always be considered a "recon" to check out your email address first...

I got a email this morning with a virus attached from someone in Aus. Coincidently a site I visited over the weekend, but to an address I only use on tt.net !

Receiving email from your "own" address is an old trick, most email systems are not secure. There is a system called Hushmail (www.husmail.com) which seems to be secure and I would recommend looking into it, I know someone on here already uses it.

One of the Klez virus variants is pretty clever. Once it infects a machine it sends virus infected emails to somones entire contact list using a random address in that list as the 'from' address. This means that when those emails are bounced by virus scanners they get returned to the person that looks like they sent them, not to the device that actually sent them - very sneaky.

until only recently, you could get a list of all email addresses of members on ttnet using this link, without even logging in

http://www.twinturbo.net/ttnetmembers/ttnetmembersearch.html

but they have removed the option to show email addresses now

i think this coincided with the last load of dodgy emails we all received

and as AndyP says, the latest Klez variants were quite clever, and i know i received a load of rejected virus laden mail from ISP's that was apparently from me, but was actually from some infected member on here frown.gif

i get these regularly, so I just delete them. I get loads of viruses come in my hotmail though. Some 318k .cpl file, i know for sure its a virus, but msn doesnt seem to think it is.

Yeah it happened to me as well, I deleted mine before opening. It is only after seeing this post did I go back onto recently deleted emails and see it had come from my own email address!

Mark
