identifying thread/bolt size

the suppliers of my new turbos are going to tap&drill the housing for my egt sensor, but they need to know the size!

Is there a way of measuring bolt/thread sizes, I'm vaguely aware of different standards too? I've looked at a couple of places online and have measured the tpi (18) and that it's 1/2" in diameter (thread tip to thread tip).

 

What else do I need?

    It's the odd one you get in a metric tap & die set.

    Just measured my 1/8th NPT tap - diameter (at largest point its a taper thread) 0.4" TPI 14
