CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF WHO WERE BORN IN THE

1940's, 50's, 60's 70's

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they

carried us.

They took aspirin and ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin.

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured

lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets

and when we rode our

bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took

hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat

belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a

van - loose - was always exciting and great fun.

We drank water from the garden hose or tap and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from

one bottle or can and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cakes, white bread and real butter and

drank cordial with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all

day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were

O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the

hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a

few times, we learned to solve the problem .

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, No video games at all, No

99 channels,No Pay TV,

No cable, No DVD movies or surround sound.

It's crazy! We even had

No mobile phones, No text messaging, No personal

computers, No Internet or Internet chat rooms..........

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits

from these accidents.

We played with worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the

worms did not live in us forever.

Made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were

told it would happen, we didn't poke out anyone's eye.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the

bell, or just yelled for them!

Local teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to

learn to deal with disappointment.

Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was

unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem

solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation

and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and

responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all!

And YOU are one of them!

Its sad to say this but HOW TRUE!!!!

I dread to think what the 'playstation generation' will make of this world

yep i know what you mean, i dare'nt let my kids go to the park by themselves for fear of them being snatched or even worse.

That was my life and I have to say far better than my kids have had and that isn't looking through rose tinted glasses. We had freedom they have never had and we had to make choices and lve by our decisions.

I nearly didn't make it, after drinking a bottle of Kaleen and Morphine (the horrible pink stuff we used to get) Having a stomach pump and then sleeping for nearly 2 days....

No lasting harm done thankfully...people who know me would probably beg to differ. ;)

That what they're telling you mate

yes children werent Molly cuddled in days gone by.

I cant stand the way children are brought up, no discipline, parents adament their children are faultless, not to mention parents being over protective too the point they are actually doing the kids more harm than good.

I know what you mean but I think that is more about the media than reality

I mean WE all went to the park and out on our bikes and there must have been plenty of Phedo's about cos there was and advert on everyday telling us not to go off with strangers

WHY is this ad not on, if it worse now?

Is it worse or is it more widely reported?

Are kids really any worse? what about football vilence in the 70's and 80's

most of them that are still at it by the way are from that era

Sorry but I let my kids out and I am not Mr unresponsible ;) I just refuse to

live my life listening to *****x headlines from the tabloids and the news is no better :headvswal Just as an example they scoured the whole country just to find a couple of loose ridge tiles and a chimney pot off so that report the

"Earthquake Disaster" And then tried to badger a so called expert into saying it was due to global warming

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

YOU OLD FARTS!!!!

Thats exactly what I imagine the older generation saying in the 1920's, 1950's and 1960's ;) Yet the world is still here. People are smater than ever and the only problem is OLD people like you! HAHAHAHAHAH

I'm sure I read somewhere that now the threat is no worse, but people just worry about it more. It's really a media driven thing, we have so many channels and newspapers to fill that EVERYTHING makes the news, people feel the threat is real and local.

In general people are very bad at understanding (or managing risk). They tend to rate low probability but high impact as high risk (eg being killed by a terrorist bomb) and high probability, low/medium impact as low risk (eg crashing a car).

You are far more likely to be killed in a car than by a terrorist.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

LOL Old at 32? If that makes me old then you are too young and naive to understand :p

Mine still do

And they are no means the menace of society :D

Both over achieve at school and are remarked upon about there manners

when we are out and about. The youngest was beating adults at chess when he was six  . But I let them do all the things I DID and they have rules LIKE I DID and I am sure theY break them and get upto mischief LIKE I DID

but theY don't let the old man find out because of the consequences and you know what NEITHER DID I

:D

Only 32  You must have done all of the above twice    :p

More like we have hit rock bottom and started digging.I'm not sure how things are "Up North" but I suspect a great deal better than London. Last year my girlfriend and I were bottled by teenages. My missus had to have 15 stitches in her eye and I suffered a perforated eardrum, broken nose and an aneurism. Things are worse but only beacuse the parents can't be arsed. They think a playstation can do parenting for them. Giving your kids freedom is fine but as children they need clearly defined boundaries of how to behave and what is acceptable. Sorry I could go into a whole tirade but unless you truly see some of the complete shithead, wasters we have in London you really wouldn't believe it. In a way I'm glad my son lives with his mum in Wales because its far nicer than here.

Sorry rant over. But what was said originally about this complete nanny state is so true it makes me sick.
