Hi

Anyone changed engine bay wiring loom and knmow how difficult it is?.....mines very corroded on inj etc!

Featured Replies

It's possible but hard work and the looms (at least RHD ones) are seldom available now. Most people solder new connectors on for the injectors, coil packs and other sensors.

These have RH drive looms

A total doddle once the dash is out and the plenumis off. Seriously it's not technicaly taxing, just time consuming. You need to give yourself a weekend to complete it and you'll need a new plenum gasket.

Just fit LHD loom, cheaper, readily available and only real difference is about 12" of extra loom that you hide under battery tray.

I've done a couple now, in fact I'm fitting another one tomorrow morning. The only tricky bit is getting the loom through the firewall....MUCH easier with engine out.

The RH drive looms at Z1 are going to come in at about £220 delivered to the door including Tax and duty.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

thats the kinda job that scares me

No need to remove dash, just glovebox and aircon box (plus a few other bits lol)

If you have big fat sausage fingers like me and don't want to spend all weekend upside down and have never been into the bowels of the dash before I suggest taking it out as you can see every thing and will not break anything. It's ok for these fellas (bloody Prima Donna's) that do it al the time and now know what goes where and how it is retained. I spent hours wasted with dash in. Dash out and it easy to see stuff and get to it.

It is true you don't have to remove the plenum, but it is a much tidier job if you do and for the sake of 40 minutes I think its worth it.

Can't see how removing the plenum makes it a tidier job Mark? There is nothing that runs under the plenum

There is now

Actually there was originally on my car so maybe it had been moved with previous work that John (Previous owner who bought at from a dealer at 6 months old) had had done, but i have no record of it.

The injector loom runs under the plenum and the wire and plug for number 6 coil pack.

Nope loom runs over the plenum.... The wires you refer to run under the balance bar and fuel pipes though ;)

does the engine loom include all that lot in pic?!....think i may just solder and heat shrink new inj plugs.....are they std plugs?

no need to remove Dash or Plenum

and its 2-3 hrs labour

I'll hold you to that Dave. Jimmer did his and because the looms are from the US which have a different spec of vehicle, he had to add wiring to it for his TT. It is certainly not straightforward but the look afterwards is stunning. I wish I had his patients.

No, the pic is of the internal car loom not the engine loom which only goes to the ECU inside the car.

Sounds like he may have been fitting a Manual loom on an Auto or vice versa. Definatly never had to add any any wiring. Very straight forward.

Only wiring that needs extending is the FPRV solenoid but I always junk that anyway lol

I found that just by cutting a small part of the tape/outershield where that part of the loom seperates from the main loom allows it to reach enough without having to do any actual wiring alterations.

The engine EFI/ECU loom is on the drivers seat and in the pics of the first links i posted.

Most of the spaggetti hanging out all over the place was HiFi and alarm crap.
