February 22, 200817 yr I have read the posts about the coils packs but still can't work out how you tell if the connection/connector ir crap or it is the coil pack? Is there a way to test the electrical pulses at the connector, should they have set values?
February 22, 200817 yr you can unscrwew and unplug the coil pack thn with car running see if it sparks well on something metalic on the engine preferably near where it sits. also see if it arks out the side of the rubber that would be a sign of a buggard one.

I assume it's best to do it with a spark plug in?
February 22, 200817 yr yep haha. take off each coil one at a time and put them next to the plug while running and see the strenght of the spark :)
February 22, 200817 yr Author yep haha. take off each coil one at a time and put them next to the plug while running and see the strenght of the spark :) Wouldn't this test only show which cylinder the problem is on. If there is no spark it could due to the coil pack or connector, how do I which one is causing it?
February 22, 200817 yr it will show which coil pack/spark is weak or not sparking. sorry what exactly do you need to know? whats the prob?
February 22, 200817 yr Author it will show which coil pack/spark is weak or not sparking. sorry what exactly do you need to know? whats the prob? I don't know how to tell if the coil pack is at fault or the wiring going to it causes it? The car has a misfire on at least 2 cylinders. I was hoping there was a way to test the wiring, i.e. take some readings across the pins with a volt meter.
February 22, 200817 yr Pull the rubber casing off the coil pack and check the end to see if the spark has damaged the outer rim of the coil (where the spring sits) this could be your faulty coil (s) as was with me skyline.
February 22, 200817 yr ah you should of said that to begin with i thought you were trying to diagnose which was at fault :)

February 22, 200817 yr Remove the coil packs one by one, at the same time listen for engine RPM change, If the engine RPM drops then that cylinder is firing ok if there is no change in RPM that cylinder is missfiring, that will help you find out which 2 cylinders are missfiring. Once you know what 2 are missfiring swap the coil packs for two that were firing ok, then repeat the above, if the coil packs are faulty the missfiring will now be on 2 different cylinders, that will help eliminate if its the coil packs or not. Also while your there check the connections to the PTU (Front left of the engine, square silver part with 2 connector plugs one each end) make sure they are clean and corrosion free. Not much but i hope it is some help.

February 23, 200817 yr put it on datascan and turn each cylinder off one by one and listen for the change
