Well nexus performance have had a good look underneath the car while running to see where my oil is leaking from.

seems to be a leak from the front AND the rear

so for the front the cambelt is being removed and changed as it is coming from a pully of some sort,

For the rear the gearbox needs removing to further investigate second leak which seems to be a crank seal.

so if the leaks are what he says they are 700 odd quid is a guestimation at the mo.

Well it needs doing so gota get did.

I was expecting around the £500 mark but there you have it.

i dont feel gutted to be honest as this is my little project and im happy to spend money on something i enjoy driving and work on.

Im sure there is more money to be spent along the line.

at least i know everything will be running sweet once its done :)

What do you guys think?

I think thats a tad expensive to be honest m8, not that im an expert or anything but the rear crank seal is £20 from mjp and i can be done in a few hours with the right tools (diy) , not to sure on the cambelt change n front end leak but isnt there a front crank seal there which is prone to perishing it cant be that expensive to do.....£700 you can by my manual tt engine for less than that....and it's a goodun.....Jay

well they said its 40 quid and hour and changing all rear seals. and changing timing belt with the seal too. im not an expert with garage prices as ive never really booked a car for work before.

£40 an hour's not too bad i suppose going by some hourly rates iv'e heard of, but id rather struggle along with help and advice from ze forum members, and do it myself then i know it's done right + you'll learn more bout your Z along the way..

too be honest with this kinda job i just want it done properly and without getting dirty. just want it done without the hassle.

although id love to be able to do it myself but i just dont have the tools.

what do others think of the price?

he said labour for the gearbox to come off and replace seal is 280 without parts.

and bout the same for cambelt without parts i thought that was about right no?

17.5 hours?????

17.5 hours?????

is that how much it is then coz i didnt do the math.

how much would you charge andy?

My local clutch care centre quoted 3.5 hours labour at £130 to replace complete clutch, and thats a box off job. just to give you an idea...

  • Author

so what you recon i should say to scott then at nexus?

how could i put it?

hi scot i know mechanics who can fit a clutch in 3.5 hours your a coont bend over?

So the price includes parts? Full 60k service kit? Is it auto or manual? If its manual I'd seriously consider changing the clutch at the same time unless its been done recently...

  • Author

its a manual. £700 is with parts, yeah i was thinking bout changing the clutch but it has "just been done" by previous owner, but the release bearing is very noisy so i might tell them to just replace that too.

Thats not actually a bad price then! Make sure they do the water pump and tensioner when they do the cambelt. Also INSIST that they replace the rubber water hoses behind the upper rad pipe no matter what condition! They're only about £7 each :)

Have the Waterpump and thermostat done at same time, and make sure they are changing the two front water inlet rubber hoses when they do the Cambelt change.

Are they doing tensioner too ?

Oh and get them to inspect the clutch for wear. If it has a standard clutch atm and you're running increased boost, just change it for an RPS uprated item ;)

  • Author

i just spoke to them this second and already said to check the clutch for wear and about the bearing as it is noisy.

but hes not starting on it till wednesday.

I also mentioned the hours and that i want an honest price and talked bout the forum, and he said he will be honest so that i recommend him and that i come back so i trust them so far :)

il mention that to them next time i phone as he is prob getting annoyed now.

but if the tensioner is new then im not having it replaced as i have reciepts for a recent cambelt change which im sure they would have done the tensioner

Scott is a good lad and has worked on jap cars for years, he is going to do my cambelt etc when he gets a slot to fit me in, he has a few zeds of his own and really knows his stuff, i wouldnt think twice about using him for any major engine work, after all its your pride and joy and want it done right first time.

I always use Scott, he wont ever do work not needed or overcharge you. Thats why ALWYAS send people his way. Good guy and knows his stuff. :duffer:
