Just bought some leatherette to do the bottom half of the door cards.

What glue have you used to do yours?

What prep work did you do on the tweed, did you just glue straight onto it?

How is it a few months later?

Cheers

Ed

Remove Tweed. Use Evostick Solvent version. (not the solvent free version).

Cover plastic and the new material, leave for a few mins then start putting them together.

Evostick Solvent version - stright over the old glue?

How easy is it to remove / pull off the twead?

What sort of leatherette are you using Ed? I was planning on doing mine soon but i've noticed you can buy a foam backed leatherette to give more body to the pannels but then i don't know how the glue would take.

Be good to see some before and after pics.

think the padded stuff is better but you need to trim about 5mm of the foam off the edges, this way you can tuck it in, and if you get glue anywhere else you can get a solvent called (spray away) to remove it. And to get it tucked in nice and neat use 1 of them brown plastic things that auto windscreens use to fit window seals, this way there's less chance of damaging the material. Hope this helps, regards, Chris.

Make sure you have a box of headache tablets close by Ed.We just did my interior in foam backed black velour and the tweed on the doors are a right pain in the arse to get off.I used brush on contact glue, and it was perfect for the job

The door cards are more of a pain to get off as they have a rubber backing on them that the dash panels dont have. Better to remove the old glue as suggested otherwise when you apply a new coat of glue, the old stuff bubbles and peels as there is solvent in the glue which tries to re activate the old. The cleaner the suface the better and remember to cut the new material slightly larger than the panel, or as you mould it to the contours you will find yourself short. I learnt from that mistake lol

just thought Ed, when i done my primera door cards i was told to do the fiddly corner bits first and the straight edges would stretch to make it neater, and it did work, keep us updated matey i'd like to see how this goes.

Well the leatherette arrived, ill check it out later when i get in.

How much fabric is normally required? I was going to order some for mine, is 5 metres enough?

5 m2? That's huge. That's like an entire hide. You should be able to do the cards and everthing else with that.

not sure if contact glue is what you need , you need something that will stay tacky for a few mins so you can get the finish right

Glue came today

Smells good!

Why is the room spinning? lol

It says apply to both surfaces, wait 5min then when they come into contact it will defy physics and be stuck forever lol. I will try it on some small bits first!

I found a write up on re-trimming, it suggests using a hot glue gun to stick down the edges.

you'll have to try and take pics as you go along, i might give this a go when i get my retrim stuff for the seats

hot glue will lift from the edges, especially in your lovely cold weather, just contact glue and tuck the remaining stuff either in the gaps for the centre of the card,or around the edges for that part

Ed,

here is a http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=270375&highlight=tweed+is+gone to my efforts at recovering the tweed. Definately remove the tweed first and I used a wire brush on a drill to remove the old glue, also roughs up the surface a bit to get better adhesion. You need the solvent type contact adhesive - or rather should I say the upholstery needs it not you!

I covered mine in micro suede

Tony from Oz

Is there any glue that can be thinned down and sprayed through a gun as opposed to brushing on?

Thanks for the link, looks very good that. I'll take some pics as I go like with the dash removal thread.

Not starting it for a week or so yet but I have got everything to do the job now :)

I'm only doing the lower door cards and the tray thing under the steering column as everything else is already black from stock.

I have some spray glue as well but I dont think its solvent, well it doesn't smell as good anyway :wack:

I used Selleys Quick Grip which I diluted with thinners and sprayed it on. Read the thread above.
