Hi All,

Im currently trying to rebuild my 1990 TT Engine aswell as rebuilding the rest of the car at the same time

Since starting this project it has seemed to whirl wind out of control!

Originaly i was just going to add a few little mods to gain abit more power, But since then i have bought a hell of alot of parts.

Im hoping you guys can help me

I have the following parts that i can remember lol

Stage 2 standard turbos rated to 21psi ,

Ported heads ,

Ported & matched plenum ,

Nismo 555's

JWT 400+ cams & springs ,

wiseco pistons slight over bore ,

Eagle rods ,

Cometic multi layer metal head gaskets 1mm,

ARP Head & Main stud kit ,

Unorthodox lightened crank pulley ,

Z1 split down pipes with screamer pipes ,

ported exhaust manifolds ,

Custom made 'de cat' straight tho exhaust ,

HKS dump valves,

Greddy kevlar aramide cambelt ,

HKS spark plugs heat grade 7 ,

Full hard pipe kit + samco's ,

Smithys braided fuel & clutch lines ,

Smithys IAA valve pipe ,

Koyo uprated aluminium radiator ,

Large frontmount intercooler ,

Is there anything i need to add or change to make the engine run ok or better

Was wondering if i would need Adjustable cam gears ,bigger injectors or fuel regulator etc..

Also has anyone got any tips on running the engine in and getting it mapped?

What sort of power do you think i will be looking at?

Sorry its alot to read but im no expert when in comes to engines lol

i need as much help as possible.

Regards

Dan

Stage 2 standard turbo's ? what exactly does that consist off ? you've already got the 555's, which would be ample for a modest build. Cam gear no unless your hoping for mega power and possible awkward driveability.

You've already got a very good list there, 1 or 2 i wouldn't have bothered with at your level, but you've enough ;)

Hi Smithy,

Turbo sport built the tubs all its says on the invoice is stage 2.

I did ring the guy a while back to ask him, all i remember him saying is it has a 360 degree thrust bearing and a larger housing or sumthing

He said they are capable of running 21psi max

Do you think with my mods i will be able to reach 400 bhp

As for the parts do i have everything i need to run the engine at its best with my mods.

Thanx

well everything else on your list is no problem for a solid 400bhp mate and you'd need nowt else. It's not quite so much the PSI the tubs will run, as the amount of power they can produce is the important factor. Plus even 500bhp zeds would run 17-18psi to achieve their figures.

Look at the exhaust side of the turbo's and count the bolt holes, if theres 4 tbh i'd flog em and go a bit bigger size wise to be safe, if they have 5 holes, yer okay ;) The split downpipes need to match though, so again if your Z1 ones are a 4 bolt hole, i'd swap they for a 5 bolt version to go with some better 5 bolt turbo's.

This will allow an easy 400bhp and room for any more you might require but without straining the engine.

cheers

Thanx for your advice Smithy,

The zed has left a big dent in my account since i started

Aswell as the engine mods Ive also had a bare metal respray and a custom made interior working out more than i originally wanted to spend.

Im looking at a cheaper opsion to a 5 stud as money is tight.

Ive just been looking at the Z1 site i see the Z1 GT525 Tubs or JWT Sport 500 are capable of 550 rwhp which still use the 4 stud pattern meaning i can still use my dwn pipes aswell.

Would these be a better opsion than the ones i have now!

Thanx

Dan

In short nope, with you having done or aquired all this:-

Ported heads ,

Ported & matched plenum ,

Nismo 555's

JWT 400+ cams & springs ,

wiseco pistons slight over bore ,

Eagle rods ,

Cometic multi layer metal head gaskets 1mm,

ported exhaust manifolds ,

Custom made 'de cat' straight tho exhaust ,

I feel your wasting your options tbh mate, the 1st 4 items are kinda wasted on a 4 bolt turbo IMO.

You could flog the turbo's and the screamer pipes and not have to add much ££ to get say the GT675RS ones or the 600R tubs, if i was to look at buying your car in teh future and found you had done so much engine work and yet stayed at a turbo so small, i'd be kinda pissed, lol

Oh and Z1 power outputs are the usual US figures, ask the likes of Kirbz or Duffers if 550bhp is capable of a 4 bolt turbo! we'd have some seriously fast Zeds on this forum if that were case ;)

P.S, i'd still swap the clutch for a MAX street personally, they ain't nice in Zeds the ole 6 pucks.

Oh, can i ask, did you get most of this from Z1 ?

Yea i see what you mean i better get saving then lol

Ive got a unit fulll of parts to sell to raise the cash it's just going to take time.

Ive not bought anything from Z1 myself!

I bought a rebuilt complete engine with the down pipes, cams ,pistons etc

2nd hand off a member on here with less than 2000 miles on the engine.

Not even any wear marks on the cams.

The engine is now stripped to insure all is well and im replacing the necessary parts.

All my other parts are mainly orderd tho DTA, RHD japan or Performancepartspro.

Out of the 2 turbos you have mensioned what type do you think would be best for my set-up?

Also where is the best place to buy them.

Thanx for your help Smithy much appreciated ;)

Dan

No probs mate, you can either buy em direct from Z1 or for peace of mind and back up service danny at dta can source, once you fit 5 bolt tubs, you'll be a lot more than 400bhp bud with those other mods you got.

Oh and i'd go for the 675's personally, which i will meself if mine ever go poop!

cheers

smithy

LOL Smithy is bang on - 4 bolt turbos will NOT give you 550rwhp :slap: The exhaust turbine housing just isn't big enough to give the flow from the comressor for those kinds of power levels. With all your other mods I'd be getting the biggest of Smithy's selection you can afford.

Although ported stock manifolds give a significant flow increase over stock, I would also consider getting some MS cast manifolds instead, these will open up the turbos to another level and should improve lag too :)

I'd save up until you can afford both the turbos and the manifolds, no point doing a half arsed job now you're almost there - you'll just kick yourself afterwards ;)

Ok great thanx for your help much appreciated

Is there any other tubs that are as gd spec as the GT675RS without having to go tho Z1

Thanx

tbh mate, the price of those is darn good! You could ask around for prices on T28 Roller bearing turbos an see what comes up, just make sure you state they are for a Zed and if the shop offer you 2 s14 ones or something like that, erm no!

i recently had my engine rebuilt by jimmer and went with the gt600r's. not unleashed their full potential yet, still in the run in stage, but even running 12psi....they are monsterous (compared to stock!)

  • Author

Im more drawn to the 600r's as they have less lag by the looks of it!

Im trying to make out what is best all round for my needs and my set up.

Im more interested in acceleration and midrange power as top end is fast enough as it is.

Anything over 100mph and my licence goes up in smoke anyway

So its between the GT600 R's OR GT675 R's

Does anyone have any views as i dont really have a clue ?

Cheers;)

Yeah 600r's sound better suited to your needs :) Deffo with the MS cast manifold and also add a Doolz intake to get over the MAF limitation :)
