I'm looking to replace my rather worn OEM Turbo pipes with either some Stainless Steel Hard Pipes or the Silcone ones.. I've heard lots about the hard pipes soaking up or generating a lot of heat of the Silicone ones so just wondering what would be best to buy really without loosing performance...

Personally i'd say, stainless is pretty if thats what you like but i'd go with the silicone due to the amount of heat that needs dispating under the bonnet stainless is not going to help with charge temps.

 

Plus i think the samco ones in blue or red look mint!!

These are Chinese manufactured which is why they were so cheap. They look ok now but give it time, apart from the labour costs they are cheap because the chinese use ALOT of fillers in the silicone so you don't actually get hoses that 100% silicone so they lose alot of the properties/advantages of a Uk silicone hose. One Uk importer of chinese hose has withdrawn their coolant kits as they all leak. At the end of the day you get what you pay for!! SFS or Samco is the way.

This is indeed correct. You need at least 4-ply hoses in order for them to have the structural rigidity to withstand the various pressures when under load (hope that makes sense ...) As I deal quite extensively in silicone hoses (and kits) from various UK and foreign manufacturers I have seen quite a few of these boost pipe kits which bulge and buckle under pressure (= not good). Hoses obtained from China (and to a certain extend the USA as well) do indeed contain a lot of fillers which does absolutely nothing for the integrity of the hose. In fact, I recently received a cold air induction kit for a 350Z from the US which contained what they claim was "blue silicone couplers" ... Lets just say that not in 100 years were the couplers made from silicone and there is no way I would let that kit go out to a customer without changing the couplers for real silicone couplers from either SFS or my own silicone supplier. You get what you pay for!

 

If you want pipes which will NEVER buckle under pressure then go for stainless steel ones. They will never perish, easy to keep clean and look good as well. Heat soak is not really an issue as it gets bloody hot under the bonnet regardless of whether you're running with stainless steel pipes or silicone hoses.

Its the fact that the stainless conducts the under bonnet heat to the intake charge though Dan ;) Although this will be minimal, every last effort counts :)

How about if we wrapp out SS pipes in the ice packs you can get form tesco :) :lol:

You could actually wrap them with some heat insulation, not a bad idea :)

Or you could go one step further and ceramic coat them :D

 

I'll be fitting SFS silicone ones soon, much easier!

I keep seeing the silcone efforts on ebay and get tempted but like Dan says I suppose you've got no flex or give in Hard pipes and with Andy's idea of then wrapping them in heat reflective tape that's sounding like the best option... Just have to weld another small piece of pipe onto the top hoses for my blow off valves to fit on to...

I've always been a fan of "GO!" rather than "Show!" and anyway people can exactly see whats under my bonnett when i'm driving so don't think it matters... I'll do a neet job with the reflective tape so i'm sure it will look fine...

 

Pfft, do it properly and send 'em off to Camcoat ;) Shiny, chrome-like heat reflective coating.. proper-like..

I'm aware of that but like you say this transfer is minimal as the air doesn't hang around long enough to soak up a significant amount of heat.

 

AnthonyD - can you let me know when the SFS pipes are with you ;)

ive now got the cheap ebay ones, i did have samco's but PJ dog ate them when my car was at SWZ.

Stainless equals twice as many joints to leak.

 

But it's so shiny...
