Hi all,

As some of you are aware I've had a bit of a nightmare getting my car sprayed as a bare metal job. It finally looks like it's moving on but the problem I have is surface rust and it's especially bad where the door hinges are. The quetion I have is how do I make sure it's gone and ready for etch primer? I've found this - http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=8229 and wondered if anyone has ever used it or knows of anything better?

Thanks

Vijay

Put some photos up. If it's worked its way through from the inside, then no amount of rust killers will remove it and it'll have to be cut out.

Ive used it when doing the inside panels of the sills and to take out the surface rust inside some of the rear panels. It seems to do exactly as it says, but im only using it on surface rust and light pitting. it won't take out heavy scaling or repair corrosion.

As Si says make sure the corrosion aint coming through from the inside before doing any of the work or it will just come back through, Ive replace a lot of metal on my car for that reason.

I did a lot of reading on the classic car forums and mags for best paints etc to use, and have decided on http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=9126 to paint the inside of panels where possible after using the metal ready and am using https://www.bilthamber.com/dynaxs50.html in all the cavities.

it's on the outside of the car only, this is what I meant where the door hinges are

Get it beadblasted . then treat it with the POr metal prep just before you put the etch primer on. Bare metal rusts within 24 hours of being cleaned if you dont treat it properly.

agree with Pete that would be the best solution, a brush attachment on an angle grinder and finishing of with metal prep will also work, you can work the metal prep in with a brush and repeat the process until the rust is gone.

can't find POR metal prep Pete?

You posted the link in yer first post Vijay ;)

I agree with Ossian about wire brush in angle grinder too as an alterative but you will need to take the wing off (again!!) to get access to it all

lol, you calling me mad?? The stuff in my post is metal ready, didn't realise it was the same thing ;)

Can't remove the wing, it's blended into the side skirt :( That's why I was hoping that spray on stuff would work. Gonna go over it with a wire brush on a dremel then spray that stuff on ;)

do you think that metal ready can be used on all panels on the car? Would it help keep the rust off till it gets into a bodyshop?

Yep . Leaving bare metal panels for more than a day is a :nono: . especially in cold damp unheated garages etc.

Remember too that primer is not watertight and leaving primed panels in damp/wet conditions may result in problems later.

Dont use the metal prep stuff over primer tho... only on bare metal.

yep it'll only be on bare metal panels, just thought it sounded ideal cos "leaves a Zinc Phosphate coating to prevent further rusting".

Not being picky here but the stuff is no good on 'bare metal'-it needs rust to react an' do it's job ;) -Good ol' Jenolite was the same!

3m do a aerosol acid etch which I would use before 2k primer, brill stuff!

oh see what you mean, it won't offer any protection to anywhere there's no rust :( So I need an aerosol etch primer then to protect the bare metal, is that what the 3M stuff is?

Yup!-it's good stuff and as usual it aint' cheap!

Vijay hope you get it sorted, i'm not having a go, but cannot understand why that area was paint stripped it the first place, IMO really was no need as it is just creating so much more work... I know first hand how much work is involved with a doors-off respray but I see that what the bodyshop guys have done as OTT and unecessary...

  • Author

Well I can't understand why a bare metal respray would take over 13 months so far!! lol Well I can when the sprayer was an absolute dickhead!!!! He's still spraying cars which is the worrying thing :( Fingers crossed it'll all get sorted anyway ;)

Any idea what the 3M stuff is called?
