 i can hear a noise without using a screwdriver!!! i want obvious lifter noise

is this lifter noise? btw this isnt my engine

That sounds worse than a lifter, but the sound quality aint great.

It should sound more like a light tapping rather than what you can hear on the video, which sounds more like a thudding.

That is most definatly not lifters.....that bottom end bearings.

Lifter noise is a fast light tap at the very top of engine, which can also be VVT rattle.

would that noise go when the engine is warm?

would that noise go when the engine is warm?

Usually yes, they will get quieter....unless the lifter(s) have dried up and seized then no it will be permantly there or a bit quieter when warm, and the best treatment is a oil change and can of lifter treatment....or failing that replacement lifter(s).

Do you have that noise and does it go away once warmed up ?

what about the bottom bearings?? would the noise go when warm!?

Sometimes yes...depends how bad. As the metal expands...etc You can usually hear bottom end gone at around 2500rpm .....and usually accompanied with a low oil pressure reading

:( I think you best get the car to your nearest garage asap so they can give it a quick diagnose.

If its lifters then no worry, fine to drive car, try the lifter treatment and an oil change.

If its bottom end bearings then it will get worse and will damage the crank and the lack of oil pressure may also damage the top end. :(

Listening to this again....yes that could be lifters.....but in a very bad state....a completely dry top end would be make more of that knocking sound rather than a tap.

dave your scaring the shit out of me mate !!!!

Gaz, have a look at the video i posted further up, stuck lifters sound EXACTLY like that.

You cant confuse the noise with big ends. When you hear that noise you know something is very wrong! I had both go on my old zed at one point or another. I ended up changing the lifters for a new set after a while, it just got to one point where oil changes and lifter treatment just didnt work any more. Easy job to do

Thats deffo lifters matey. They sound very very dry tho.

New lifters or taking them out and manually cleaning them are the two options me thinks. If you need a hand, ill come down and help as ive don both before

thanks nick that would be very much appreciated if it comes to that!

The only time I have heard it like that is on a newly rebuilt engine with blocked oil feeds to one of the heads.

The fact that it goes completely away once warmed up is a good sign though. How oil is the oil, whats you oil pressure gauge showing (any different to normal?)

Have a go with some Lifter treatment before ripping the top end off, you can get it from most motor factors, its magical stuff ;)

new oil changed today as i thought it might help with the noise. pressure guage never been great but 1/4 on tickover near or on 1/2 reved. been like that since i have had it back in april 2005

Thats not too bad, from memory is that about 15 psi at tick over and about 45psi under load?

is there a preferred make of lifter treatment . all i know of is wynns lifter stuff.

any tried and tested brands??

I always used wynns mate, but i think Millers do some as well.

Dont want to sound sceptical bud, but they sound a bit far gone for lifter treatment to have a lasting effect. Hope im proved wrong

oil pressure should be more than that, depending on oil viscosity, if the oil is thick when cold it may not be getting to the top as easy as it would when warm and thinner. what oil you using?
