Could it be the PTU on the driver's side cam cover. Mine chucked it on the way home from work after a 5 min drive, wouldnt start, then did start and I drove it for another 10 mins when it stopped again, wouldnt start then did and did the same again until I got home. I messed about with it at home, car chucked it completely, I left it for 2 days and it started like normal first turn of the key. I bought a Series 2 PTU from Courtesy Nissan in USA and its been fine ever since. Doesnt log any fault codes either.

cheers for that mate im hoping its something simple

there was a strong smell of fuel as well as if it was overfueling

Maybee not overfuelling but just working as it thinks it should but you would have no spark. You should do a search of PTU in this forum, I am sure there are plenty other posts relating to similar faults. From previous posts of others the S1 PTU does fail as its probably 18 years old, the newer S2 ones are a lot better.

id bet your indicator fault was a hazard switch button where you may have caught it with your elbow whilst fitting the stereo... wiggle the hazard switch about and see if the indicators work again...

as for the running problem... my first port of call would be the ptu and maf terminals... take em off, give em a clean and reseat. it could just be down to the damp weather. failing that i would try either a known good ptu or a series 2 version...

wow... christmas eve... a skinful and im actually talking sense :hyper:

spot on about the indicators mate took of the hazard switch on top of the pod and they started working again cheers

car started as well ticks over fine until it starts to come up to temp then if you blip the throttle lightly the revs drop then catch but def starts to go rough when getting hotter and thers a smell of fuel

reseat and clean the maf and ptu plugs :) though its possible you could have a boost leak by the sounds of that...

i,ll give that a try ,tried a forum search and it seems to point to a temp sensor as a possible culprit can this also couse these symptons

and oh merry christmas everybody :hyper:

Merry Christmas Tommy, if I remember all the hassle I had with my car happened at Christmas Time, so they must fook up seasonally (or at least mine does)

well thats it then cars not getting its crimbo prezzy then lol

just done an ecu fault code check and its flasshing 13 so looks like a fooked temp sensor anyone have one

  • Author

if the ecu has been unplugged overnight would this reset it as iv just plugged it in his morning and the fault code is still there although i havent started the car

Resetting the ECU wont change the fault status as its obviously seeing the fault constantly or as an Active fault. If you had an intermittant fault then resetting would clear it until the fault flashed up again. Is there not a resistance check that can be done on the sensor or wiring to the sensor from the ECU?

cheers mate just thought i wouldnt read the fault until the car was started and with the ecu being diconnected from its loom all night i just wondered if it would of cleared its fault codes overnight same as disconnecting the battery

have tryed to clean up connections again so will try it again but i recon the sensor itself is knackered as the connectors didnt look bad

Well that would be my understanding of the ECU logging fault codes as with the ignition on the ECU is running and will be checking all its signals so if it isnt happy it will show that by logging the fault code.

nice and quiete for me mate been seperated for a year now so went to see kids in morning then tinkered with car in the afternoon pub in the evening

in fact may be pub again tonight lol

went back to car and the code 13 has gone !!! now showing 55 took car for a spin and fooking hell what a differance ,i must have been in safety mode since i bought the car , came back checked codes again and hey still 55 and no smell of fuel as there usually is ,it must have righted itself ,result ,will still change sensor me thinks :hyper:

Pub sounds a good call. With regards the sensor it might have been the connector and it doesnt take much for the ECU to log a fault. At least its cleared which is good news. I am hoping to get my car converted to manual soon, just need to sell me private plate as I was gonna do it myself but I am thinking of putting it in a garage, but will wait and see.

Cheers John
