Right...

I have a 93 Uk spec LWB TT zed. It has 80k on the clock and is an auto. It had a cambelt changed less than 1k ago.

I took my 300 out for a spin this morning. Coming off a roundabout it went a bit sideways. Anyway, I caught it before it went too far and headed off up the road. When I put my foot down it was severly down on power.

I got it home, popped the bonnet and there was some smoke coming from the back of the engine near to the oil dip stick.

When I put my car down the car boosts on the guage as normal but there is no power, it feels like an N/A!

I think I can hear the turbos hissing - could I have blown off a boost pipe somewhere? I've read about acuators getting stuck open as well... I am new to these cars and no mechanic.

The gearbox still works and changes up and down as it should. The temp guage sits in the middle and it doesnt seem to overheat. The oil level is fine according to the dipstick and there is no mayo in the oil. The car lives in my garage and hasnt dropped any liquid onto the floor.

There is no smoke from the exhaust when revved either so Im sure the turbos havent blown a seal or knackered themselves.

Any help or advise of stuff to look for would be appreciated guys. And have a good xmas all!

does it rev above 2.500rpm?

and you say it is still boosting past the normal psi?

hat smoke from the dip stick is where the nearside turbo is. could have seized a turbine. or maybe like you said the hose has come of the turbo which would explain why there is alot of hissing.

you should be very careful coz if the turbines aresucking from the atmosphere something can and probably will get sucked in.

take it to a garage and on a ramp and have a look. take it anywhere where u can see underneath where the turbo is.

It will rev past 2.5k. It will rev as normal just without the turbo kick :-(

When I start the car the gauge goes to the middle and then back down and if I drive it it boosts to the top of the gauge as it did before - just get the hissing noise. If it has blown a pipe is it easy to get to or will I need ramps? I just had a listen and I think that the noise is coming from the N/S front. The exhaust sounds different too.

From what I can see of the top of the engine all the pipes are intact. Underneath though....

yeah u need to have a look from underneath.

I think the hose has come off or a big split in a hose somewhere near the turbo coz ur getting boost pressure which means the turbo is spinning but the air it is creating is just going into the atmosphere and not into the intake and ur getting no power from that side of the engine.

hopefully its that and not a siezed turbo just go kwik fit and pretend you need a new exhaust and get it on a ramp and have a look.

if nothing is split or come off, then turbo might be siezed as that would cause diferent exhaust noise and less power, your probably getting the boost reading from the offside turbo.

im not sure how the ecu would read the problem, going to safety boost etc. what make on the boost gauge does the neddle reach?

Could be a simple vacume hose come loose as you went sideways. follow all the turbo hoses and see if any are loose etc.

Thanks guys. Just spoke to my mechanic. He seems to think its blown a pipe off from what I've told him. Like I said, I dont really know my way round these cars. He is gonna pop round in the morning and have a look. If it is a pipe, hopefully he can stick it back on! I hope its not a seized turbo... If it was would the gauge not just read half the boost as normal?

well as long as you can hear the nearside turbo spinning... should make a wistle noise.... if it sounds like air trying to get through more like a hiss noise then the turbo isnt spinning but doenst necessarily mean its siezed :S hopefully its fine... good luck. and good luck with the manual conversion your planning for the future ;)

oh and the standard gauges are not very accurate and you would still get a reading from the offside turbo... i think.

ta j1mmytt. It sounds like its spinning. I hope its just blown a pipe. I'd been told these cars were money pits. Manual conversion!? Maybe one day...

You'll know if a turbo has seized - the boost gauge will not go above 0 ;)

Cheers,

Andy

did ya get it sorted then ?

Hi all. Right... The AFM at the front of the car is missing the metal bit and has been cable tied on. The cable had come loose so the AFM wasn't on properly. Put it back on and the car drove perfect! He couldnt find any loose turbo hoses. However, once it had warmed up I noticed that noise again. We couldnt get it on the ramps but he recons the exhuast might be cracked somewhere. When the power died I had been on quite a lengthy drive and giving it some beans. If there is a crack I'm guessing it would expand when the car warms up? Could this cause a power loss?

Anyways... both turbos are working fine which is good news and the car is driving spot on at the moment so I'm happy again.

sometimes with hair line cracks in the exhaust manifold when they warm up they expand and seal the crack and the leak goes away. yours is the opposite.... Your going to have to have a good look around that area for leaks and cracks etc, sure you will find the prob on a ramp.

give it a good rev on the ramp while you look underneath and have a listen for any leaks etc.

what kinda noise is it again???? you sure its not a detting noise???? cracking kinda sound

I'll have to get it on a ramp at some point. Don't think its detting. Is that quite a distinctive cracking noise like you say j1immytt??

Mine makes a hissing noise, like some air escaping or getting sucking in where its not meant to. Its not doing it at the moment, only seems to happen after a spirited drive.

I'm still happy cos its running!!!

I duno why it would sound worse after it warms up????? just check for leaks and loose hoses etc :) im sure its just something minor now...
