300zx or 928 ?

Okay, so I just got a new job and decided to celebrate by buying myself a car. I decide I'm gonna spend about 4 1/2 grand and I want something a bit querky and reasonably quick.

Now, I have a bit of a thing for Porsche 928's and yet I also have a passion for 300zx's, We've had a few Nissans in the family in the past, 280zx, 200sxturbo and silvia turbo, so I know that they are reasonably reliable etc.

I could get a reasonable 928 for the same money but I'm pretty set on a zed.

What I need you guys to do is give me all the reasons why I should get a 300zx instead of a 928.

Thanx

LO Booster

3 years ago when I went looking for a "toy" (someone paid an invoice so I needed to spend it quick) I first started looking for MG V8. Couldn't find one with a budget of £5k which didn't need work doing or competent mechanic to look after (that's me out, then).

Someone said "what about a Porsche? - get a 924 (I think) S2. I found one in a barn near Newbury with over 115,000m on the clock (at the home of a reputable trader). And no clutch. They said if I wanted it, they would put a clutch in before I drove it away. Oh and it was £8k

In Autotrader, while looking for a 240Z/260Z etc, I found these strange things called 300ZX TTs. Ooooh look - and only £7,995. And only 43,000 miles. Compare to Porker? No contest.

Zed is bigger, faster, better looking and doesn't need Porsche dealer maintenance costs.

(And that is even after I had already picked out a name for mine - the MenoPorsche)

By a Zed - yo uknow it makes sense!

No contest.

I had a 944S2 Porsche before the Z , it was very unreliable, parts are very expensive and gearbox bearings went at 60,000 miles. Despite the popular conception Porsches are NOT super reliable. If a 928 goes wrong it is potentially much more expensive to repair than a Z will be.

Changed my 944 for a Z, Nothing gone wrong in 4 years. BUY 1!!

Well i'm afraid to say (and i'll get my coat) that if I were looking to the long term then I would have to go with the porker.

I don't care what anyone says, the value of a Z is dropping faster than a whores draws.

Now i know a lot of you guys are going to get all defensive over this. But i'm sorry it's a fact.

Non turbo's at the moment just about make £2500 and t/t's well we know you can get a good one for £4500 on a '92.

Actualy this could be a good reason for buying one.

if you weren't worried about having a car worth only a couple of grand in 2yrs time.

And that WILL be the case.

On the other hand the 928 is at it's lowest point ever and will only increase in value over the next few years.

If you get a problem with either, you are looking at a nice bill.

Look at any old porker, they all make money.

Look ay any a old Z.

I rest my case.

(through hand grenade in and run for cover)

In the short term though I'd say the Z.

(get yourself out of shite quick)

Rick

Do you really think that old porkers will go up in value ? Not sure about that. Truth of the matter is that standard vehicles will always be worth more than modified ones when they get collectable. In the meantime, buy one cheap, look after it and enjoy it.

Is the point not to buy a car for your own pleasure though and not what its going to be worth in a couple of years. If you enjoy a car for 2 or 3 years and loose 2K then thats nothing. Buy a new car and you have lost that much by driving it out of the showroom

Paul

hi booster,

we could quote numbers all day long,0-60,top speed,running costs,maintenance costs,badge power,etc,etc

but unless you can afford a series 2 928,please please just don't go there!!!

IF you do decide to buy a 928 make sure the auto box has been rebuilt by a good man as they swap oil and water if you dont (mega bucks)common problem with the cooler,

buy a twin turbo,YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE!!!!!! smile.gif wink.gif

Hi

I was dead set on buying a 928 right up until I actually drove one.

The interior looks like something out of saturday night fever, and the sort of 928 you'll pick up for £4500 would be absolutely destroyed by a 300 performance and handling wise.

Neither car is cheap to run, but the 928 running costs are legendry, if something goes wrong you can quite easily spend the cost of the car trying to put it right.

The later model 928s were a big improvement, but are still fetching good money.

and as for what rick was saying...

Not entirely true.

In order to get a good residual on a porker (and I speak from experience having owned a 944 turbo) it needs a full porsche service history, which will cost a hell of a lot more than what the 300 will drop in value.

And this also only seems to apply to 911s.

Rick made the point look at any old Z, by the same token look at any old 928 (they have been round since 1978) it aint worth much....

The defence rests wink.gif

apart from the awsome performance of the z and the fact that there is so much more power to be had out of the stock engine, i would say that one of its best attributes apart from its suprcar looks is the fact that nobody knows what it is or ever sees one, so gawp factor 10 for z, and gawp factor 4 for porche. I have recently moved to east yorkshire and have not seen another zed in my area for 4 months, its not surprising everyone looks as i blast by them!

Thanks for your input chaps, I knew I was making the right decision, I'm going to look at some TT's today.

I'm after a manual TT in silver with leather if anyone spots one ?!!
