Yes, Chris, I have. In fact I've been chatting quite a bit about this with Craig, and have been discussing ways of reducing this bandwidth requirement whilst still allowing for some nice little features. There are certain things that can be done, but then again, everyone needs to think that this is an improvement without loss of quality.

 

Thanks for all the calculations but if you read Mike's offer above properly you will see he offered 20GB per month FREE plus £3 PER GB over that amount. So if it goes over by your 5GB example then that works out to me to be £15 not £150. Seems like a very good deal to me but maybe others can beat it?

 

Yes, sorry, I re-read that part and noticed that about the £3 per Gig deal (sorry Mike!). That's not a bad deal really, and something worth considering. However, I also know that some ideas that Craig had for the site would help in increasing the amount of users registered and also the amount of information on the site, so if something drastic isn't done soon, it could be that the bandwidth usage goes sky high and even Mike's generous offer could work out expensive. It's gonna need careful planning, which of course will take up a lot of Craig's time - again, going back to the issue that he's a bit fed up of late. :-S

 

I'd be suprised if they offer after all this to be honest. I offered a a few hundred quids wirth of Qube server which is similar to the Raq units this site will probably be hosted on. What have you offered apart from your usual rantings and abuse?

 

I'd help Craig reorganise the site and try and fit in more functionality for less bandwidth, that's what. Craig and I developed some of the code that runs this site together. I'd also offer some handy little tools for you guys to play with. I've just finished one here, for us MR2ers:

Here's the calc 5Gb= 5000MB= 50 x 100Mb = 50x£3 = £150.

 

 

Here are the tru calculationns for 5gig over usage

 

5*3= £15

We could have a whos got the biggest dick contest by quoting bandwidth figures. In 1999 our network pushed through 7000gig a month since then usage has curbed down to around the 3000gig which is roughly 10mbs down from 22mbs. Your argument is worthless, If companies such as channel4 and several gaming networks are willing to host with me then Im sure the network is more than adequate for this board.

 

 

I stated how you were wrong, you doubted that i had the technical knowledge to back up my offer when infact this is what I do for a living.

 

I'm not trying to make a profit out of this, I host other peoples sites on here for free because it is my way of giving back to a community. If you can get a bigger deal than that then tell me please.

Mike, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt here, and assume that you HAVEN'T read my apology for seeing your extra bandwidth charge correctly. In the industry, it's a common thing for people to quote extra usage as per 100Mb, so I assumed that's what you were charging. However, someone pointed that out to me, and I apologised TWICE.

 

So, here goes again, SORRY about the mistake on the calcs, yes, you're right, this changes the extra bandwidth charges down to 10% of what I said.

 

Now, that aside, DON'T get into a debate with me about hosting, traffic on big sites, etc. Be a fucking MAN and accept my apology. I've got NO interest in arguing with you about my credentialls and the size of the sites that I've worked on. If you doubt it, then speak to Craig privately offline and he can confirm. A true professional doesn't spout off what companies he's been involved with on a public forum...

c4 have lots of subsideries that outsource to other hosting companies. we dont actually host the channel4.com website otherwise our throughput would be obscene and id be driving a ferrari :O)

 

Im all up for an open discussion/debate but not someone getting on their high horse, what did you think i was going to do? host the server on an ADSL line? 20 gig whilst not being a lot is about the average a medium amatuer site does these days, the larger freelance sites generally do upwards of 75gig, infact one server of small sites has 2000 accounts on it and rarely pushes more than 10gig.

 

Obviously i have to set some limit on my offer, if this site pushed 100gig in a month then thats going to see me out of pocket.

I remember giant tomatoes chasing me down my street once. The next time I was in a nightclub in Blackpool that was full of naked women who all offered me BJ's.
