It seems to be a pretty much a top subject in the news at the moment.

As some of you may seen, the current government has decided not only to go against the long term agreement of a yearly pay increase that matches the rate of inflation (3%) every september, but also not back date the pay increase.

Most will probably guess what my reaction to this is, given my current choice of employment, but im curious to what you guys think about it all.

Please dont comment about the whole subject of whether police officers should be able to strike or not, which to be honest, will never happen.

Nick

This government is not to be trusted, the independant body said to pay the money and they are not, it's as simple as that. They are trying to cause a fight and there is usually a reason for it, maybe to show Gordon Brown's authority or lack of?

regardless of employment a pay increase should not only be to police officers but for everyone who has to battle against inflation. But agree as a government more should be done to honour what the majority think?

to be honest this country as a whole is run by ****ing imigrants, my daughter goes to school where 40% of her class our fookin non british!! joke! so extra staff are needed to cope with the language barrier, not the same subject but when you think about it, its probably issues like this that put extra strain on budgets which affect me and you.

I completely agree with you, and a pay increase to cover inflation should be incorperated into every company. BUT its not, as much as it sucks.

The major gripe i have is that one of the things the Police has always had is a statutory pay rise every year. Police officers have given up lots of other things to keep this, Travel allowances (which every MP gets), Housing allowance (which every MP gets) and the biggest one being the right to strike, so its not like we havent made sacrafices to maintain this agreement.

And yet some pen pusher in downing street sees fit to piss all over my pay slip!

IMHO it's fookin' disgraceful not to back date it. If a statutory pay rise (that covers inflation) is part of your Employment T&C's then it should be honoured. Not back dating it merely devalues the original pay rise. :nono:

Having been in the military for 20 years I know what it's like to receive "staged" pay rises that don't fully kick in until several months after the pay award.

You have my full sympathy...................

There is a petition that can be signed to support the police officers cause however I don't know the web address.

Surely if the pay deal that was agreed to and signed by the powers at be is not upheld then it is breach of contract.

I was under the impression that a mans wage (earned monies) was sacred and nobody but the CSA could touch it, so the pay deal being a legal paper documant means nobody but the CSA can mess with it.

Am I wrong?

I could not give a Toss I have to fight every year for my Shite pay rise as do most people

Private sector worker are not guaranteed a pay increase every year in the same way the public sector are, nor do the private sector have a gold plated pension to look forward to.

In the past, this was more or less compensated for by private sector workers receiving higher pay than civil servants. Although if recent surveys are to be believed, the public sector has narrowed the gap significantly over the last few years.

However what is the average salary for a PC nowadays - at a guess is it around £26-£30k? If so that is no way enough for the work they sometimes have to do. I wouldn't like to do the unsociable hours; risk getting shot or stabbed each time I go to work; or clean up some poor dead unfortunate who has been pasted to the road in an RTA.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

A couple of things about the pension is that!

1. The police still pay for it.

2. It isn't guaranteed, the government are making headways into it and will continue to do so.

The pension scheme has also been altered recently for newer recruits meaning they have to work an extra 5 years to get a full pension and after that only get half pay as opposed to two thirds.

I just want to say that I dont have much sympathy, Prison Officer pay used to match police pay, Just to put things into perspective a bit...

A newly recruited Police officer will start on 21k ish. Rising to I think 32kish for a basic level.

Prison officers start on 17k Rising to 27k.

These pay scales used to be side by side

I know they pay for it out of their salary - as do teachers etc. But when my father was a teacher, he paid reduced rate national insurance contributions to compensate for the pension deduction. So in all his take home pay would have been virtually the same as any private sector worker on the same gross annual salary. This was also the case for Inland Revenue/Customs/DSS employees too.

I had assumed it would be the same for the police but I didn't know what changes have been implemented in recent years.

Some of the public sector jobs are very hard to compare to private, so it really is not a side by side comparison, I am unsure of NI compensation so can't say!

Why is it today that people have changed and have a more selfish outlook, everyone compares it to themselves and thinks why should x job get paid more than me, maybe if there was more unity and support then this may help your own pay rise?

I think we are getting slightly off track here, the fact of the matter is the government refused to abide by their own abitration committee's recommendations and not pay the money on the agreed date!

Now if you want to slag off great working conditions, then MP's salary and conditions really is taking the piss!

Sad but true mate!

Basic pay for a copper OUTSIDE of london is £21K, which goes up to around 30K after 10 years service if you stay as a PC. Obviously London Weighting ads a fair wack of for Met coppers. But i think the national average for a PC with 5 years service is around £24K
