Hi Computer Whizkids,

Can you give me a helping hand.

I ran defrag literally as I said for Four Days and it only ever completed 10% before restarting again!

As far as I knew I shut down any windows programmes that were running, but how do you tell?

Any advice, apart from enrolling on a computer course would be appreciated!

Cheers,

Mark

Mark,

I had the same problem and i am no computer wizard by a long shot.

Press Ctrl Alt and Delete at the same time and you will get a list of all programs running. Shut them all down and try that.

Empty your recycle Bin and delete all Temp Internet Files.

It worked for me so you never know.

Mark,

Something was writing to the hard drive while you were running defrag. Bring it over or I can come over to your place and help you with it. Are you working tomorrow? I should have the office to myself due to the tube strikes.

Format and reload windows - solves all problems smile.gif

It really does sort it all out - full format and reload..

This is a common problem with Windows 95 and 98. 95 was worse.

If you have any turn off any virus checker while you run defrag, and if you are on broadband, unplug the power to the modem.

Other than that get norton Utilities and use that defrag. Its the only good thing on it.

But Glenn is right. Nothing works better than format and start again. biggrin.gif

I like it sooooo much I end up doing it every few months. wink.gif

Hi,

Would I lose all my files,if I do not save them to Floppy Disc by formatting my computer?

Hi,

Duffman, although you originate from the Dark Side. You cannot pollute this thread with your Bad Karma, I refer you to the Post 'Forum Group Hug'.

There is time yet my friend wink.gif You sure I cannot tempt you to the dark side with promises of huge rear wheel horsepower and tales or group buys gone wrong? biggrin.gif

On a serious note, if you don't back up your files then yes you will lose them. You'll strugle fitting much porn on a floppy disk though biggrin.gif LMFAO wink.gif

What you can do then, is delete your windows directory and install it all again. You will have to install the programs again but all your saved data will still be there.

Or buy a CD writer and back up

Or buy a cheap Hard Drive and install on that and use your old one as a back up or data disc.

Stuart.

I usually make a ghostimage of the fragged drive (to another harddrive) using Norton/Symantec Ghost

Put the image back and all fragmentation will be gone.

Works like a charm every time and is quicker then using any defrag software.
