:headvswal removing headlights to clean them today I stuffed some kitchen paper into top of both air intake pipes after removing the air filter and y tube so nothing would fall in there . Started pissing down halfway into the job so I started the engine to move it into the garage. Yes, you've guessed it, they've both been sucked in there :headvswal

i've tried using a bit of flex attatched to the hoover to suck them back out with no luck.

i'm almost too embarrassed to ask but where have they gone and how much damage have I done?

Just had a thought, i use a flexible worm for my plumbing, its about 10mm wide spring, with a screw(like cork screw) on one end, i use it for searching out blocked pipes, once you hit a stop (blockage) you wind the other end and the cork screw grabs whatever it is, or go to a local market and get of of those flexible grabb things, about 2-3ft long, used for picking ups nuts, and others items. Might work and save a load of hassle

Oops :( Start by removing the inner boost hoses to the TBs, then the outer boost hoses from the turbos to the ICs. Check those for any signs of paper. Once they're off you'll need to remove the black metal hoses from the turbo compressors in order to get to the black plastic turbo inlet pipes. Depending on the age of your PCV hoses (they attach to the turbo inlet pipes) they may crack when you remove them to remove the pipes in which case will need replacing. Check for paper as you go....

Cheers Andy, are there any diagrams on what your telling me, as most of it I don't understand. I need someone to literally point a something to tell me what it is :o

Thanks stu, I borrowed one of those today and tried it for about 30 mins. Also tried the hoover again with a narrower flexible hose attatched. no luck.

There is a tight angle about 2 feet in which I can't get past.

depending on the type of paper the worst senario would be bumper off,and whizz the i/c,s off as they may be blocked a little (not a big job)

The paper is the type on a roll in a public toilet you would dry your hands with, the industrial type.

oh and cheers for the link Znut :duffer:

I wonder if it won,t rev cos the paper has jammed the tubs , in which case it would be stopping most of the air passing through as well  .

If it,s the hand wipe type of stuff it,s quite tough stuff so if a ball of it went down the intake it could be stopping the tub/s from spinning

The actual metal air feed pipe on the tubs aren,t bad to get off , looking at your pics your halfway there already having removed the rubber pipes , there,s only a 10mm bolt holding it to the side of the plenum and a jubilee clip at the tub end .

Easier with the battery out of the way as well , fingers crossed it,s an easy fix bud .

That's what i'm hoping. that the paper is still scrunched in a ball somewhere along the line. I'm wondering does the piping get a lot narrower in places before it hits the tubs?

If the z engine was anyway workable even a dope like me wouldn't have to keep asking these silly questions :(

I used to think changing a fuse in the footwell was difficult :D

Hope its not jamming the tubs as you're risking the shafts twisting taking it for a drive. The plastic turbo inlet hose as a bit of a sod to get off with plenty of swearing... The shredded paper shows that some has already gone through the turbos though so the ICs are gonna need cleaning out - the paper won't get through those....

got the ic's off today, one of them was bunged up with paper, the other was ok, just a little paper inside. I've chickened out and given the job to my mechanic, hopefully he'll get further in the pipework tomorrow

Cheers greg and dave, i'm hopeful it will get sorted, the mechanic is the same guy who did my man. conversion so he's fairly handy. i printed off this whole thread today and gave it to him to be of help, I don't think he was offended, he was more interested in looking at markzx's zed!

fingers crossed :duffer:

just have a look at what grief two peices of flippin tissue and a big slice of stupidity can cause :mac1:

no progress today, the mechanic was being called out on breakdowns every hour.

This wouldn't be so bad if his garage wasn't directly across the yard from my workshop, every time i look out the window i'm reminded of what I caused.

there is so much pipework in there, very confusing, and of course no room to get your hand in most places.

hope you get it sorted soon mate. oh, and dont forget about that coffee cup!

 ;) cheers dave

Keeping my finger crossed for a posertive outcome Mick.

While he has that front end off give those headlamp hosings some TLC and get the healamps stripped and cleaned.

Me too Mark, BTW the reason i'm in this trouble is because I was taking the headlights out to clean them :slap:

. he's going to blow some compressed air into the turbo inlets on monday, we think it's just the one side is the problem from the amount of tissue that came out of the drivers side intercooler.

not forgetting that means its the passenger side turbo with it having a strange crossover piping system or is that at the tb,s?? cant remember for sure but worth checking out because i do know somewere it DOES crossover

pissed off now. pissed off at the garage, pissed off at myself. and missing my little honey.

tomorrow is monday, over a week since this happened. i'm still no wiser on damage. I'm flying to the UK on sat. night for the SE central meet and really hope i'll br driving the 100mls to Dublin airport in my Z. the wifes volvo V40 is comfy, my nissan cargo is economical but i don't want either :(

Hope garage get off their arse in the next couple of days and let me know one way or the other.

Thanks so much to everyone for their advice and thoughts, What a great place this is ;)

:hyper: drivers side sorted! This came out this morning in one piece as you can see, jammed right down on top of the turbo. Bitch to get at, but now feeling confident the other piece is in the same place on the passenger side. Things are looking up :)

OK, update.

Even though all relative pipework possible has been removed and checked car still won't boost, gauge will barely pass halfway.

I'm 99% sure drivers side is clear

Other side is different because some paper went throught the turbo, but I don't know how much. Found bits of it here and there. Got down into the inlet pipe as far as you can go but doesn't seem to be any left, although it's impossible to actually see "inside" the turbo itself.

Main pipes on that side are lined with an oily fluff (probably pulped paper)

There are no strange noises, engine sounds normal
