:headvswal removing headlights to clean them today I stuffed some kitchen paper into top of both air intake pipes after removing the air filter and y tube so nothing would fall in there . Started pissing down halfway into the job so I started the engine to move it into the garage. Yes, you've guessed it, they've both been sucked in there :headvswal

i've tried using a bit of flex attatched to the hoover to suck them back out with no luck.

i'm almost too embarrassed to ask but where have they gone and how much damage have I done?

i didn't realise until I was about to put the y tube back on. In between that I had started it a couple of times to turn the steering wheel for access to the bolts, it started fine and sounded fine, I havn't started it since i realised what happened

are you absolutely sure you never took them out and binned them?

positive :(

ok, this is what i would do.

1. remove front bumper

2. remove piping to intercoolers

3. check for paper in the side tanks of the intercoolers (find out which side is IN and which is OUT)

This would tell you if the paper hit the turbo's or not.

Sorry, I'm wrong.

:( oh sh*t . But if that's what needs doing .....

cheers turboz. If they have gone to the turbos, what's the best case scenario?

hopefully, the turbos have shredded the paper and spat it into your intercoolers. in which case just clean out the shreds and you should be ok. you'll probably find out quite soon afterwards once the paper is removed.

I would also double check with someone who knows the Z induction system (ie Topless, andyduff, paul@swz) before starting the engine again.

Keep us informed mate! Im sure you aint the first and will not be the last!

I doubt if the paper as done any major damage, it will probably be a case of undoing hoses until you get to the paper?

i remember chris (getgreddy) doing the same thing when he got his car painted, started the motor and just spooled it up and spat it through with no lasting damage.

should be fine mate, remove all pipework and go from there, got to be better than dropping a bolt in the pipework!

At least its paper, just need to find where its gone, if it does make its way to the tub's it will get very very hot, might give you a flame show. But i would be cautious until you located the stuff. Ive got numerous bolts and a stanley knife under my plenium. JUst cant be asked to remove it to get them out lol

Oops :( Start by removing the inner boost hoses to the TBs, then the outer boost hoses from the turbos to the ICs. Check those for any signs of paper. Once they're off you'll need to remove the black metal hoses from the turbo compressors in order to get to the black plastic turbo inlet pipes. Depending on the age of your PCV hoses (they attach to the turbo inlet pipes) they may crack when you remove them to remove the pipes in which case will need replacing. Check for paper as you go....

its called wiping the arses of t25's :D

I hope it wasn't Bounty kitchen roll, Not sure if the tubs can shred that !! ;)

On all seriousness, all the best mate, I'm sure it won't have done any damage but it's gonna be a pain in the butt takeing all the pipe work off. It may be worth bying a long claw. You know the long spring type ones, that way you can try feed it up from the ends of the pipes to see if you can feel any blockages there. If you can you may be able to claw it out.

cheers for the help everyone, I went down to the workshop yesterday took a look at what i had to do and went home again pissed off. This wouldn't all be so bad if it hadn't taken the best part of 2 hours on saturday to remove that b*stard of a bolt (the rear inner one on the passenger side headlight) and getting the lights sorted, having practically finished the job at teatime then realising what i'd done.

Im going to have to get off my arse and sort it today, i'm just shitting myself as i've not gone that far into the engine or removed stuff like that before. i'm out of my depth here. But then I remember feeling the same way about the heater matrix(cheers greg), fitting boost jets and other jobs i felt were way off my range.

C'mon mick, stop talking and get to it :( :headvswal

Oooh, pants!!.. That's the sort of thing I would do :(

Hope you get it sorted mate.. It certainly does sound a bit of a daunting task.. Make it worth your while, and do some (hard to get to) upgrades as you go.. New pipework etc.

Good luck mate

Hi Mick

Nothing technically difficult to this job but, You need the bumper off and better take a good look at your knuckles as it'll be Christmas before you see them without scabs again.

Good look and be thankfull you got a work shop to do it in, cos the weather is aweful.

ok heres where i'm at. I removed 2 pipes at the top to try and get to the 3rd one beneath them which i believe is the one the paper travelled through first.(impossible to get at still) There is evidence of shredded blue paper in the lower one. i didn't try and remove the bumper, i need to do a search here to find where all the bolts are first.

while i was doing this a guy called to collect some stuff from me asked what I was doing , told him, he does amateur rallying so knows a bit about cars, told me the paper should just be shredded and burned don't worry about it.

after reading znuts post and how chris@greddys car was fine and just chewed it up i decided to go for a spin. car will ramble along slowly but if i put the foot down nothing happens, won't go past 3000 revs. (yes i'm sure MAF is plugged back in). I can hear some vibrating, as if the turbos are trying.

So yes , I may have made things worse, but i had to try it.

The pic here shows exactly the amount of paper put in each vent.

bumper has to come off, maybe things will make more sense then :(
