Well

Go to the car, start it, set the turbo timer to 10 mins, take out the keys and lock the car. Go in and have some breakfast.

Halfway through go and repaet the process. Go back in and finish breakfast.

Come out and the car is nice and warm and defrosted.

Oh and don't forget to reset the turbo timer to the usual setting !

Good way to cause premature wear to your engine. Best thing is to get the engine on light load (ie drive it on light throttle) as soon as possible...

As above! You're doing more harm than good. I never leave mine idling from cold. Makes me cringe to even think about it. Z's warm up very quickly anyway, so get in it and drive it and save its internals!

hmmmmm never knew this :x: (when i could) I've always let mine run for a few minutes to warm up thinking I'm doing it a favour!

this just reminded me of something else I've been meaning to ask, when is it safe enough to open the loud pedal? I try to stay below 3k and use light throttle till the gauge is almost at half way point but surely it cant be fully warmed up within a few minutes of driving?

Basically you need to get the oil up to temperature as quickly as possible and the only way to do this is get the engine under LIGHT load. Let the temp guage get up to half and the oil pressure stabilise before hitting the loud pedal :)

my oil pressure gauge dosent work, at least a dont think it does? when the engines cold it goes upto about 3/4 then once its warmed up drops below 1/4 and hardly moves

this has got me thinking, how long should I set my turbo timer for? if its set too long could that accelerate wear? its usually set for 3mins

always thought turbo timers are a waste of time as such, as above drive from cold and when on the final couple of miles on your journey, stay off boost and the forward motion of the car will keep everything cool much more efficiently

It's ok on cool down as the oil is less viscous (resistance to pour) and will have circuluated and would still be being pumped up at a reasonable rate. When an engine is cold, oil viscosity is much higher (I think engine oil when hot is like something like 60 centerstokes whereas when cold, it's over 100 centerstokes). Not to mention the fact that you also have no oil up at the top end of the engine. So, the oil pump is working very slowly on an engine with thicker oil on an engine with very little oil in the heads. Metal against metal!!

Exactly. Pre-plan what you're doing, it's not difficult. If I have been boosting, then before I know where I am going to stop, I just drive at a regular pace. Similar to when I start the car from cold, but in the opposite order. I'll not bring my car on higher boost levels until the oil pressure has dropped to below the 1/4 marker.

As an extra note its not just the turbos you protect by driving steadier for the last 2 miles or so - also prevents the risks of brake discs warping :)

good god didnt realise this, why has someone not posted this sooner?? have been a zed owner for like coming up 4 years now and usually always let her warm up before goin anywhere..

great!!

Cheers for the info tho

Its a common misconception (sp?). Oil only really works when its warm so the quicker you get it there, the sooner its doing its job.....

ive got one and never use it. in fact its one of the mods that will be de modded if I get a chance.

It has been brought up before a few times in threads like 'how long do you leave your car up type threads'. Ends up being about a page full of people praising themselves for leaving theirs for 30 mins to warm up...and yes, I think there was someone who'd leave their car to idle from stone cold for 30 minutes!!!... before the likes of me and Andy tell them they are actually ****ing their cars up before the thread stops dead in its tracks! LOL ;)

Im sure i read in the nissan manual that until the engine is up to temperature the ecu keeps the car in safety boost via the solenoid valves.(when connected)
