Ive been looking around for a new ride for a while now, and ive come down to two cars:

Nissan Skyline R32 GTR V-spec.

AND

Nissan 300zx Twin Turbo.

Now any of you who know me know ive already had a 300zx TT, and as much as i loved it, the relationship wasnt always what id call happy, and it cost me alot of money (which i will admit was mostly my own fault) but i was completely smitten with the car.

The reason i have come down to these two are as follows:

300zx: I know the workings of the 300 pretty well through all the 'bad' times i had with it, so that experience i think is invaluable. I STILL love the overall look of the 300zx and it doesnt take too much work to get rid of some of its features that make it look a touch dated. The ride was firm yet you could do big milage journeys without too much hassle. And Finally, even though the back seats are tiny, you can get the kids in there, or a baby seat

R32 GTR: I've always loved the R32 ever since i used to watch the Jap Touring Car Championships round an old school friend of mine, and man did it kick some arse! It not a pretty car, but its not in your face and is verging on a bit of a sleeper car. Theres alot more stuff available for the GTR than the 300zx. Its still got that small amount of room to fit the kids in the back. Its a new experience for me, never owned a 4wd performance car as well. Once again it doesnt take alot to bring it a bit more up to date.

Now I know im posting this on a 300 forum, so i know the opinions may be slightly biased, but I am looking for OBJECTIVE and CONTRUCTIVE responses for this thread! SO PLEASE NO "GET THE 300 COZ ITS THE BEST" type posts :x: :nelson:

Unfortunatly i have not had the opportunity to drive these cars back to back, so doing a direct comparison for myself is going to be hard to do. In short i'm relaying on some of you who have driven a R32 and a 300zx, and PLEASE let me know your honest opinions of your experiences.

So over to you guys  :duffer: :hyper:

Nick

my brother in law had a r32gtr full hks tune running ridiculous power and it was immense, buy both and fit the running gear from the gtr in the 300

i love the R32 GTR, would love one in white, kirbz was gonna buy one once and it looked great, ask him what he thinks

IMO the 300zx scene is drying up the amount of peeps leaving here is alot more than the peeps joining. zeds are dropping big time all the time not that they should be (there too cheap) and finding a good one is very hard thats why i'm going the GTR R33 route. I love the zed to bits but everything is an up hill battle getting parts doesnt cost the earth, getting work done "without being done"

but the inside of a skyline is sooooooo boring its like being sat in a 80s datsun and at least with a zed the only chance of seeing another is at a zed meet lol imho

They're both 15yr old cars, the associated problems are gonna be

pretty much the same nick, crispy wiring, turbo seals etc etc...

As for looks, the z is 'sleek & sophisticated' while the skyline is

'brutal & aggressive'.

The skyline was designed as a race car, hence the bland dash, it

doesn't need to have a 'designer dash', you only get what you need.

There are more skylines about that've had £k's thrown at them than z's, so

finding a nicely modded one should be easy.

Oh, and theres always the fact that you could buy 2 z's for the price of

a half decent v-spec.

Anyway, what happened to you wanting a supra? :x:

That'd be my choice, look better than a skyline & just as tuneable.

I've had 3 Z's and a R32 GTS-T with full GTR kit which looked cool as poo in white (photoshopped wheels tho :( )-

but I'd have a Z over the Skyline any day!

Yes, it's an outstandingly capable machine (the GTR I mean) but is a completely different experience to a Z, and due to their popularity everybody knows what they are. I like the Z as it is a more solid/planted car with ample power and, in my opinion, has bags more wow factor in the looks department.

I have emailed him, but i got no response, so i spoke to Lee @ Import-ance instead, who gave me some usefull advice (cheers again matey)

I just wanted to see what other people thought

Depends how exclusive you want to be?

I travel all round Lincolnshire for work and across to Leicester all the time, I see loads of Ferrari's, Aston's, Skylines, 350's etc, etc.... But I never see 300's! I always get people looking at mine (which is nice ;) ) But unless a Skyline has a loud exhaust, no-one will bother looking twice at one (I will though because I like them :D)

If the 300 had had four wheel drive and a more easily tunable engine, then it would of pissed all over the Skyline!

Well that's my opinion :D

Dave

the 300 is all about looks and comfort with decent power

the skyline gtr not a looker not comfortable but with decent upgrades

will put a very large smile on your face then theres but no 2

you will want to keep upgrading which will hit your pocket

for me at 48 its the 300

just sold my gtr32 if i was younger it would be the gtr

As youve owned both, what are the differences in how they drive. Pro's and Cons please Tommy

Cheers

I can't speak about the R32 GTR because I've never driven one, but back in 2003 I had a R33 GTR Vspec for about 6 weeks. I put my Zed up for sale for £10K and fortunately got no takers so sold the R33 instead.

The first week I had the R33 I thought it was awesome but from then on quickly fell out of love with it. The GTR Vspec computor ruins the drive. You find yourself being diappointed when you go round bends so you just go faster and faster. The Zed comes to the edge of it's traction in a posretive way giving feed back. You know when your arse is on the edge. You have that being on the edge buzz.

The Skyline doesn't give you that feed back. It isn't a drivers car. IMO and I know Paul300zx feels the same it is a car for people who carn't drive to be able to drive fast.

I remember a particular section of the race track I used to use on my way to work having a bend I had perfected an adrenalin rushed 120mph romp through in the Zed. You could feel the tyres were close to letting go.

4 weeks into having the R33 I romped round the same bend at 140 mph and it wasn't even scarey until I was going at 75 down the motorway and I thought. "if I'd lost the back end there was no going back, but the real scarey thing was I have no idea how close to that point I was. That I had kept going faster and faster and still getting no feed back. I felt that this was not the car for a looney like me because, the moment I found that piont would be the last moment of my life.

The Skyline sold in three days for exactly what I paid for it and the blue Zed is still mine "sort of"

you couldn't give me 5 minuites to have a chat about the R33 v-spec i'm getting one i read all i could about them but i got really stuck about how the car spooled up and ended up missing out on the car

If I had £10k to spend on a Nissan. It would indubitably be a 300zx (M30Z/Pentroof/SMZ/genuine 99-spec). The Skyline GTr as much of a great machine that it is, it just doesn't have that visual appeal that the Z32 does. The 4x4 system is probably about the only 'real' bonus it does have and the tune-ability. But since I am not wanting huge power out of mine, that holds no advantage. With the Skyline, you loose the t-tops, the sleek and sexy lines, the exclusivity of it, the driving position, the cabin plus that V6 burble, which IMHO, sounds so much nicer than the more droany straight 6.

They cost nearly as much to fix, parts are of similar price. It's only the fact that you can leave the engine in situ to replace turbos/remove heads that's the main advantage.

but people want to give peanuts for zeds they dont get that someone has spent thousands on the zed and still want to give £2k for it. With a GTR you spend the same and will get about 4 time more atleast

I would say it is the other way round. If you do some careful shopping you will get more value for money with a zed. IMO...

Don't sell it then. I'd rather donate mine to a museum than let it go for pennies. LOL
