Right, I'm on a Shitty BT surtime package and thinking (after ur responses on my last post) about going to broadband. What I need to know is am I right in saying that I need to keep BT as my ISP and there for keeping my e-mail address? And do I need to pay BT anymore as I won't be using their dial up number (or will I)?

Thanks

Vijay

Yep you need to stay with BT to keep your current email address presuming it is a BT address you have.

I think if you goto BT broadband you can keep it.

Hi Vijay,

if you go from BTs dial up to their broadband service, you can keep your email address. But if you move to a different ISP, and stop paying for your BT dial up account, you will lose your email address.

Cheers,

Andy

p.s. must meet up again soon m8

Vijay have a look at http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/ Its the forum for http://www.adslguide.org/ .

Have a browse though the forum and see what the BT ADSL users think of the service.

I'm with Pipex ASDL and have only had a small disruption in service once.

My mate had 4 weeks without his BT service! but he will get 1 month free.

For what it's worth I've gone Freeserve Broadband and I've been very happy with it (although probably not sharing the bandwidth with many people in Caerphilly!).

last question - promise!!

Can I just use any asdl modem? and is there any difference using an internal or a usb modem?

Cheers

Vijay

You should just be able to change your BT account to Pay-As-You-Go, meaning you can keep checking your email and not pay them anything. biggrin.gif

You can then go and use any ADSL service you like.

i got fed up changing my email address ages ago, always swopping every so often

sign up for a free bigfoot email address, use the same one for life then they send your msgs to whatever your current isp address is.

Dave,

That's a good idea! Do you know if I'll still have to dial in using the BT number though??

I belive you can use most types of ADSL modem. I use a Fujitsu FDX310 external USB modem, plug and play on Windows XP!

You have to check if your motherboard has issues with USB devices.

What you may find is some ISP's provide a ADSL modem for a price(£50-£80).

I've kinda decided on Pipex and they charge £129.99 for a modem. PC world do a Zoom USB modem for 80 quid.

Well I've just checked my BT mail from my Freedom2Surf ADSL account and it works fine. I can't remember the last time I dialled into BT.
