For those of you with vibrations coming from the prop shaft area ...

This has already been explained on TT.Net but I can't reiterate it enough. I have had bad vibrations for a long time now. You can hear and feel it coming from the centre console area. Do not assume that it's the prop shaft! I have had the tranny mount replaced and ALL vibrations from that area have disappeared even though my prop looks as though it needs sorting.

A guy in the US replaced his prop and experienced the same vibrations fairly soon after. The vibrations disappeared when he replace the tranny mount. I would guess that the tranny drops and alters the geometry slightly. I have an auto tranny. I Don't know if its the same with a manual but I would have thought so.

The mount cost me under $90 from Courtesy and its not that difficult to replace.

Lesson: Replace the mount first and see what happens. If you want to replace the prop anyway make sure you replace the mount at the same time otherwise you could risk screwing up the new prop.

Anders is 100% correct guys,

If you are changing anything that requires a Tranny Drop, GET THE MOUNT CHANGED at that time, especially if you haven't had it done for a while.

If the Tranny mount gets worn not only will you get vibrations thru the prop shaft you will be causing excess wear to the U joints which are NOT servicable. Also you are putting more straing on your bell housing bolts if they have not been correctly tightened you are in a whole other world of hurt.

If you have some spare time and want a pet project read Tom Bells excellent write up on this at www.zhome.com, the job is a easy one.

All you guys say is 100% correct minus the fact that a tranny drop is NOT NECESSARY to replace the tranny mount!

All you need is a tranny jack to lift it up enough to slide the old mount out.

It's 20 minutes of work if you have the jack and WD40. It's WELL WORTH IT for sure.

Yeah,

I didn't mean to emply that the tranny needed to come down, simply that if you were having tranny / Prop shaft work done and being faced with a tidy bill anyway then may as well get that done at the same time.

Thanks every bod, mine was vibrating between 20 and about 60mph, only sometimes though, usually first thing in the morning. If I ever get it back before the next Olympic's I'll have the mounting thingy replaced.

I have the same problem But at about 3000rpm

So around 80-100 mph which can be felt through the steering wheel.

I have changed the brake pads so far & have had a service done. (60k)

That does not sound like a prop shaft/tranny mount problem. Take your car to a decent 4 wheel alignment centre. Have them check all the bushings: Upper arm, Sway bar, especially tension rods, track rod ends etc. Have the wheels checked to ensure they are not bent in any way and get them balanced! Check the tyres. Have a full alignment done. Have the rotors checked too. A lot of guys have them 'turned' in the US but warped rotors should be visable at lower speeds too.

The best way to check if you have vibrations coming from the prop is to drive up to the speed where the vibrations occur and quickly slip into neutral. If the vibrations go then it the prop, tranny mount etc. If it stays then its probably one of the things stated above.
