Do any of you guys have a one piece propshaft fitted to your zed or know anything about them ?

 

My centre prop bearing is on its way out and dont know if i should buy the new bearing or go for a one piece prop.

 

What should i do?

 

Also can anyone recomend where to get a one piece prop from if that i the route i should take.

I fitted one, it was'nt too bad to fit. I still have the original vibration I had before the cx so either I didnt replace the right thing or I have introduced some new vibes however the prop is running true as I have used a DTI on it.

Retrospectively, unless you desperately need to reduce weight cos your racing, I would stick to original set up as it compensates more for misallignment between gearbox and diff.

Had the same problem - thought the centre bearing was going. Took the plunge (good exchange rates) and bought a one piece from the US - when I removed the 2 piece the prop centre bearing was ok... Tried the 1 piece and it still vibrated - car accelerated faster - 97NA.

 

Had the 2 piece checked-out and balanced etc by a company called Propshaft Clinc - and they said it's not the prop nor the rear geatbox mount. it's the hangers on the exhaust that were too long and putting extra strain on the rear gearbox mount... So I replaced the hangers with Bluebird items (£20) and guess what - the vibes went away...

 

Turned out to be an expensive lesson.

 

And the 2 piece is certainly smoother than the one piece.

Are you talking about nissan bluebird hangers if so what model did they come from please?

Dont know mate - got them from an exhaust trade place - they said Bluebird. I'm sure they only chose them because I'd said Nissan when they asked me what car are they for?

Could you feel vibration through the car or more just hear something vibrating ?

Whatever, I will try that fix, it cant hurt.

Generally vibrations through the car come from prop bearing, uj joints or gearbox mount, have not heard of the exhaust mounts but if they are not supporting the exhaust it means more stress on the turbo/manifold/gaskets!

Had trouble with mine but found it was bent by 2 degrees!

 

After sorting that it has been perfect.

You could certainly feel the vibration through the whole car - not just the seat base.

You should not feel vibrations with a one piece prop, if you do then the prop is either out of balance or the vibration is from elsewhere (eg. Gearbox mount or Diff). Its wise to replace the rear gearbox mount at same time, there is actually a design flaw that causes it to sag.

 

I've found them to offer a noticeable improvement in performance, especially with low speed acceleration...but as wel as that they dont cost much more than a replacement centre prop bearing and never have to replace them again.

 

Lots of modern high performance cars are fitted with one piece props these days.

mine is now smooooooooth!

My experience is the same as Jacks. However I didn't get to change the exhaust mounts. My 1 piece prop ran true but still had vibes. I replaced gearbox mount with new, tried lowering the box but still vibes at 55+MPH, sold the car (or gave it away in todays marketplace). I would stick to trying to rectify the original prop. My lesson cost nearly 4 figures.

cured my BAD vibes and got a great deal on a custom set up.

 

import duty was a bit high, but worked out in total to approx. £220

 

was quoted £195 for my old shaft to be balanced, without removal and refitment.

Or you could just send your old prop off to one of many prop shaft company's in the uk and ask them to make it into a one piece of the same length I got mine converted to one piece and uj's renewed for not a lot, shop around

I spoke to a well known Propshaft manufacturer in the UK....they said if I bought at least 10 they could do them for £1200 each :headvswal

did you send your old one back to them or just pay the core charge?

You can't convert it, it is not the same length.

 

How cant you make a one piece prop from the original ?? you tell them the length you need you cut off the gear box end leaving a short pipe and cut off the diff flange end leaving a shoth pipe, throw away the bit in the middle, send it to some one like

It's a bit pointless reusing the same UJ's as they are often the culprit, but apart from that the old two piece and the new one piece are not the same length.

just read all this. can we just safely assume if your getting bad vibes, get a prop from Z1 (ask them to put a happy birthday card from uncle joe in it) and why your at it change some mounts. It seems 90% of vibes are prop, and ballancing dont always seem to fix it.

They fit new UJ's when they make the prop and its still cheaper than getting one imported from the states, mine has no wobble noise or vibration and also has a different flange on the rear so it fits the 200sx diff

No disputting the suitability, just the fact it is not the same length!

i have a look the other day for a carbon 1 piece i know AMZ did them before they changed hands but now i cant find one anywhere
