Compaq Presario V6000.

My other second hand Fujitsu gave up, so thought I'd invest in something a bit more reasonable. For £650 I got quite a good spec'ed one. Dual Core centrino, 160gig hard disk, 2gig ram, 2MB cache, vista and a few other bits and bobs. Very very quick it is. Quite amazing what laptops can do these days! LOL My first ever laptop was about 4 inches thick with a rubbish little screen and running windows 95. This one's wide screen too and the graphics are simply superb!

Anyway, this one's got Windows Vista on it, thought I'd have a ball ache trying to get used to it. But I really like it. Not really used to any real capacity, but it seems as easy to use as XP.

Who else is running vista? Anyone note any issues with it trying to get old software to run with it?

I'd never go back to having a normal PC now. I never used to like laptops, but the one I've bought is way over power than what I really need.

What's ultimate SP1? Just a different release?

you can buy vista in

home basic - with most things missing

home premium - has more features avaliable

bussiness - doesnt have all the media thigns but has more security features

ultimate - has everything on it

the sp1 means it has the first service pack where they patch everything they missed before it when into production

don't know what your missing, wouldn't want another desktop PC, big ugly box taking up loads of space, no portability, noisy, unsightly, guzzling the power and in return it does nothing a laptop can't.

i run 2 machines and adding a 3rd soon and laptops cant cope with the storage or upgradeability. At the moment my machine looks like this

and there is still room to add 2 more machines in the case

I wouldnt go back to a desktop now, nasty horrible things - I even have 2 laptops lol one for when Im working away and another for when Im back on my hols :p

rubbish, there are high capacity drives for laptops now, and anyway mine has a large external HD. As for upgradability, I can upgrade the CPU, RAM, graphics card, optical drive, I can plug devices in the PC card slots, USB/firewire ports. It is no less upgradeable than a desktop. The only downside I can see with laptops is the poor screens they often come with, too small and terrible PQ. This is why mine runs in tandem with a 20.1" monitor while at home.

One of those just makes your livingroom(delete and insert as appropriate) look like a server room :headvswal

at least a laptop can just be folded up and kicked under the couch when its not needed   ;)

I have a macbook, best laptop i've ever had by a long way,

don't think I could have a rack setup at home, they are too noisy

Nice laptop - I have an older Presario, the 2500 which is excellent. :D

As for Laptop v Desktop it's horses for courses as far as I'm concerened. I mean I wouldn't want to take a desktop out to the Zed and use ConZult and similarly I wouldn't want to be storing and using thousands of MP3's and 100 's of Movies on a Lappy (sound and picture quality springs to mind).

Each to their own tho'.....................

Love my laptop couldn't go back to PC, but an etch-a-sketch would be fine for a computing amoeba like myself :D

Small home office, Large desk, Laptop syncs with Desktop and sits next to my screen for multi tasking....working and being one here, working and watiching TV, Watching TV and being on here....Harmony people, Harmony...!! Oh and my machines are Grey, which is why they are faster!!

not sure I undrstand how the sound or picture quality would differ if it were stored on a laptop of desktop

My laptop's got amazing graphics. Totally blown away by it to be honest. The top end desktop PCs I looked at had not better picture.

unless your going to run any sort of demanding 3d application you wont notice any difference

Thanks to MXM technology, laptops these days can be equipped with very powerful graphics cards, not quite like the latest ones for desktops but perfectly capable. Besides which most people will play games on their xbox360 anyway so it matters little.

Well I quite like my sound to come thru' the surround sound speakers and subwoofer - not easily taken out with a laptop :D

I also like the picture on my 19" widescreen along with the second screen as well :D

my laptop has digital audio out like most do these days, plug it into an AV receiver just fine if thats your bag, I used to have such a setup but sold it after realising i could buy a real stereo hifi setup and dramatically improve the SQ by ditching the box of digitalness. As for the screen, I like multi-mon setups and large widescreens too.

DSCF0843Large.jpg ;) (I also like big desks, jeez that one was crap)

Also being pedantic, for watching videos, TN/film monitors are quite poor, bad viewing angle and colour reproduction, all 19" widescreen monitors are TN/film. For serious quality you need a 20.1" (dell 2007WFP has a superior S-IPS panel) or a 24" (most come with M-PVA panels). My advice would be to ditch the 19" and get a 20.1 anyway, the silver one in the pic is a 19 and lasted me only a couple of months before the low res bugged me so much I just decided ona whim to go out and buy the black 20.1 which is a far superior screen even though it is still a TN/film.
