My gear box went with a rather large ploom of smoke last night. Its had a nasty vibration and a very bizzare hesitation for a while now. It was selecting gears fine and holding power in gears, it didn't throw up any probs on the computer either.

Anyway, whilst giving it a bit of right foot on the m25 last night the bottom seal went and pissed oil all over the exhaust. I didn't know what it was at the time so i was out of the car, fire extinguisher in hand as quick as possible, lol!!!

Looks like a new box for me!!!

That is a shame mate.

amd it's bad news in one way, but now you can use this excuse to put a manual gearbox in! :x:

Funny thing - my Autobox - when reversing out of my driveway from cold - tends to be 'lumpy' it's like a slipping clutch effect - then it seems to clear and it's fine all day.

Would low fluid or something else cause that? It's done 55000 miles.

Don't want to hijack this thread but all the autobox guru's will read this for sure!!

Sorry to hear that mate.

As above!!! Manual box, you'll enjoy the car a lot more. For the hassle and ball ache of taking out, reconditioning or replacing auto box, you may as well fit a manual. Not just that, but it'll add saleability and a little value to it too.

I always thought Auto's were the way to go when buying as it was a fair assumption that the car hadn't been thrashed to death re box, clutch, motor??

you know , im gonna throw a bit of a curve ball here, now my power is starting to get decent , I think i would go for a fast road auto box with a shift at will kit, dont get me wrong , I love the manual but fast launches are harder to do and it would be nice on long drives for auto option.

Goes and gets flameproof undies on :x:

Gotta remember its still a old autobox, its just a old hydraulic pump really and will go bang, there are things you can do to help it stand the test of time but eventually all pumps will stop with age and wear

For that tiny thing of a slight advantage on hard launch you'll sacrifice the loss of being able to select your own gears and downshift whenever you want to? Although you want to have a shift at will kit, it's not a real substitute for having a clutch and gear lever. Not to mention, manuals 'sound' better. When you hear an auto shifting, it doesn't sound anywhere near as good as when a manual is shifting. If you know what I mean.

Yeah you can fit some bad ass BOV`s to a manual to really hear it better when your shifting :x:

but seriously its a good time to do a manual conversion, my first zed was an auto (and tbh I quite like driving autos) but the difference between that one and the one I have now is huge :D

I'd rather have an Auto and 'cherry bomb' exhausts than fit BOVs!

yep manwells do sound better, all the time , not just on gear changes.

Autos just suck... and yep they sound crap as well personally half the fun is changing gear, it feels so much more fun :D :D :D

Yep totally agree, love my manual and a short shifter.... heaven :hyper:

On the way to Mids Meet today opened my Zed up and I couldn't stop giggling as I got into 3rd gear.....

Cheers for the support guys.

Id love a manual conversion but my clutch legs a bit knackered from a bike crash a few years back so its out of the question really. I really don't enjoy the auto box but the only way to have a manual is to have a clutch on the gear box but its a £1500 conversion

I too have been looking at the shift at will kit. Its around 900 euro's and as well as being able to select your gear it also locks the torque convertor so that you get engine breaking!!!!! Sounds good.

So.... looks like a referbed auto box. Will see what the garage says next week as it may be partialy covered by warrenty. If not im going to change it myself at weekends!!!

Well it sounds like you should go for the SAW kit. that will make the driving experience a lot better.

Plus you'll feel like a Formula 1 hero behind the wheel!
