Hi all,

I am looking at getting a new Z which I have had a TT before.

However I fancy an RX7! any one had one of these & pitfalls?

Would like some views!

I always heard rotary engines were a pain in the A$$ ?

There has been quite a few magazine comparison tests, performance and track time is similar. They all tend to give the RX7 the edge on being more sports orientated in standard form, while putting the zed as the better all-round car.

Royal had a fairly stock 2+2 TT Zed and has a stripped out full-on 500/600bhp monster of an RX7...so might not be the best comparison. LOL

Trevz however has had several RX7's and Zed's and might be able to advise

I always wanted RX7, GTO, 300ZX, Supra, Skyline, F40, F50, Mclaren F1, Enzo... :smash:

Zs sound and look better IMHO. I quite like the look of the RX7 though, but it doesn't have the road presence of the Z32. They don't sound nice either. VERY loud with a decent exhaust on, but droany and whiny, not deep and burbley like the VG. Everyone raves about the noise the rotary makes with a decent exhaust, but I've never seen...or heard what all the fuss was about. Never thought they sounded that good TBH.

I have had the privelidge to own both.

In my opinion the RX7 is a more focused sports car, it has the edge on speed and handling due to a virtually perfect 50/50 weight balance but its no daily driver !

Also with the rotary engine prepare to spend a bit of money when the engine goes bang ( Not if but when ! )

If you really have to buy one, then you really need to be looking at one which has proof of a recent engine rebuild, if you not you could be facing problems with one thats done anywhere over 40K miles

Anyway i sold mine because i love my nissans, and wished i hadnt got rid of my first 300zx :(

av seen a good few RX7's at the strip and they dont sound nice at all, raspy as raspy can get, does me head in even thinking about it.

looks alright - but what the hell is a "FERRARI/SKYLINE BRAKE CONVERSION"????

being a show car i would like to know when and where the paintwork was done as well.

its way better than the normal tat you get on ebay though

regards,

Horses for courses mate. The two cars are quite different, even a standard Rex. If you want a sports car/track car then the Rex (standard or not) is head and shoulders above the Zed. If you want a performance road car that can drive across the country then the Zed is one of the best out there IMO.

The Zed is the most expensive car I've owned to maintain, assuming you want to get everything right which I did. Everything on a Zed is either expensive or a nightmare, hence why they are so cheap now when comparable cars such as Supras are still three or four grand more.

An Rx7 rotary engine is actually one of the cheapest engines to rebuild. Bits needed are roughly £1200 and labour can be got for £1000. The main problem is that they usually need rebuilding at 60k miles so don't get one near this unless its had a rebuild.

Rx7 are more expensive to buy than Zeds, although I'd say if you buy well then it will equal out as there are a lot more expensive things to replace on a Zed. On the other hand though you could get one of the best Zeds out there for £6-7k that has had £15k spent on it whereas you'll only get a bog standard Rx7 with rebuild and possibly a single turbo conversion (much better as it eliminates all the problem solenoid areas).

With all respect mate, thats a standard Zed with a tidy body kit and alloys! 121k miles will possibly need new turbos, new cam belt, new heater matrix, etc. Plus I don't see what has been done with the brakes ? they look the same size as normal??

Thanks for all the comments.

The zx or rx7 will not be my daily car!

I was looking at importing an rx7 with 80km.

I really did enjoy the Z so a rx will be totally diferent!

Anyone imported a car or used a broker or both?

What price do the brokers command?

Thanks Art

Royal - I was being a tad sarcastic ;-)

Haha, soz thought it was your car. I'll go back to sleep.

thats a LOT more expensive to rebuild than a Zed engine!

I'm talking blown pistons here, not just a ring refresh. A rotary tip refresh would probably cost £600 including bits.

The labour involved in rebuilding a Rotary is tiny compared to the Zed. There's hardly any bits to a rotary.

SWB looking nice by the way :)
