yeah must likely speed sensor

about 80 quidish i think

nope but dont use yer cruise controll and it will also affect yer power steering

If you have a kph convertor take it out of line as these play up, £138.00 for speed sensor new from nissan, try mike freeney

hold on.

It isnt your speed sensor. I had the same problem with mine. all of a sudden one day it didnt lift from 0 then it kicked in and started working then it fell over to 180 then worked again when going over a certain speed, stopped again and so on.....

I had the speed sensor swapped and it made no difference. The problem is with your actual clocks. The solder joints become dry and loose conection. You can take your clocks apart and melt the solder on each joint individually with a soldering iron and hopefully you hit the right one and cure it. Sounds bad but not that difficult.

Unfortunately mine didnt work even after resoldering twice so i bought a new set of clocks (well actually i bought Jap clocks and transferred the speedo clock and put on my old mph face and recalibrated). There is actually a set of UK clocks here for sale http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=101743 good oportunity/excuse to install uk spec mph clocks if you have an import.

I'm gonna go with Speed Sensor on this as it's a more common fault. Mine is still playing up and it mainly does it when the weather is damp or wet! No problems when you've got a nice dry sunny day.. Need to get mine sorted soon though as it's a bugger! Also I get some other nice little problems when this happens like when I dip the clutch coming up to a junction it try's to stall and if you try and boot it in 5th past 4000rpm it boost cuts!

speed sensors are pretty expensive. I would spend part of the weekend getting the clocks out and soldering the joints. that is free and if it solves the problem you have saved yourself buying a speed sensor that hasnt solved anything.

When my speedo used to stick if i tapped the plastic face at the front or the cowling on the top it kicked back in. If yours does this it is definietly a problem with the connections in the clock not the speed sensor. If this doesnt work it could also be the clocks if the bad connection is really dried up.

That is sensible thinking and like you say it free! I know mine is def speed senor, if a tap or hit the dash it doesn't make an difference and like I said it only happens in wet weather!

sounds right if it happens only in certain conditions. Have you checked to see if it is just loose and shorts out in the wet due to exposed contacts? It is up by the gearbox somewhere.

Yep dry joints on the back of the speedo head

Yeah, I've had a good look and the wire is and it's solid and intact! Think your right, could be the end contacts exposed and need to find some sort of cover for them... It's gradually got worse as the years have gone on and it's now really pissing me off! Might have to take some pics and post them up to see if it looks normal.

mine is permenatly at the other end, smacking the dash does nothing :(

any chance a front end bang could have done this? if so i may as well add this to the claim ;)

you've not crashed it have you?!

If you've ruined it im gonna come up there an do you in! ;)

Im having the same problem, most of the time when I drive the speedo moves tiny amounts depending on the speed that im doing (60kph = 10kph on the speedo, doing 130kph = 30kph on the speedo), other times is will be fine. and in we weather it just stays at zero.

I replaced the speed sensor yesterday (Got a second hand one for £23) and its still happening.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
