After a normal run there seems to be the smell of burnt oil round my rear end (cue for carry-on style gag ...)

On closer inspection the diff appears to be leaking some oil, I assume the level is ok as no light apperas on the dash (ie. diff oil warning lamp, which shows ok on ignition)

although it could have been disconnected.

The service manual indicates that you remove a plug (on the offside I think) and dip in a finger to check the level !? I guess the car should be level when you do this so jacking up to gain access DIY could be a problem.

Any ideas on likely causes, and a method for checking the level?

Cheers,

Glenn

Glenn,

My diff was leaking oil past the front seal.

To cure this, just replace the seal of course but

there's one problem.

You have to remove the flange that the drive shaft bolts on to.

The removal is not a problem with an impact wrench.

The tightening is difficult, as you are preloading the front bearing by tightening the center screw.

To set this to spec, you have to disconnect the driveshafts (?) from the wheels to have the diff free-rolling and measure its rolling

resistance.

I didn't do it the proper way last year, as I knew that

I'll be dismantling the rear suspension anyway soon.

To measure the oil level, you have to stick your finger in there and as you

say the car must be leveled right.

The diff warning light is only lit when the oil is to hot.

Hope this helps.

Mine is leaking too. Maybe we can organise a group repair hehe. I already have the new seal. I'll wait for feedback fom Steve E on his new prop first.

Maciej,

I have received the Leather Handbrake boot. Absolute quality. Cheers M8.

Anders,

If you're talking to me then it's the wrong Maciej :-)

There is another Maciej (aka Keepsake) that makes those boots.
