does the gear shift linkage have to be taken off in order to tilt the gear box when taking the engine out please, sorry if this seems a silly question!

No, I only took the prop off which allows the box to tilt.

Could you get at the top bolts on the gearbox tho?

Yes, if you drop the sub frame (makes splitting much easier) and tilt the engine and box forward you can reach the bolts with a 14mm spanner

you can access the top bolts from underneath without dropping the gearbox by removing the battery for the n/s and the starter for the o/s. If this fails then no you just let the back of the box down on to a jack slowly without removing the gear linkage !

Thanks Paul, Ive had enough for today as its bloody cold plus I need more plasters and cigarettes, some beer will help too

Use a couple of half inch drive extensions joined together and a swivel joint on the end with your 14mm socket, you should then be able to get onto the bolt and work the ratchet from about two thirds along the length of the box. You might be able to squeeze your free hand up the side of the gearbox to help the socket engage the bolt (but you really need small hands)
