I have owned the car for a week and now remembered why I sold the last one - they are trouble!! :(

When I started up this morning there was a really loud metal scratching sound coming from the general direction of the Autobox. The sound gets higher when you rev the engine. I had a look round and all seemed well and the noise went.

Started driving to work and in the first traffic jam the noise started back up. Really screetchy and I dropped it into neutral and it stayed the same for a bit and then gradually faded away again. Although it does seem to get louder when going slowly.

By the time I got to work it was nearly constant.

The car is a 92 TT.

Any suggestions?

I had noises like that coming from my NA LWB auto, not long after that the gearbox lost all drive when it was stationary in park. I hope yours is not the same! They are lovely cars when there going well...

Dont drive it, drop the gearbox oil and pan, clean up the filters and replace the oil with new. See how it is then. Damage is most likely already done though, so start saving for the the worst case. £1600 ish manwel conversion

Where is the best place to get this fixed? - I am in Wiltshire

How much is just a recon autobox fitted likely to cost me?

If you are in Wiltshire, I would say try Paul at SWZ, he should be able to help you out mate.

Well I got it to the local garage and up on ramps just to see if it was something simple and guess what!?! It was! :)

Whoever last did something to the engine or gearbox had not bolted the starter on correctly and it was hanging off and they had failed to bolt another brace that holds the gearbox on.

£25 and a few new bolts later - job done :)

Thanks to all for the help - i was in panic mode but feel better now.

Thanks to SWZ for the chat on the phone too - I will be booking the car in for some other jobs very soon :)

It was appreciated - I was really stressed out earlier!

Drove the Zed home with a big smile on my face :)

it can just be the worn out thread on the bellhousing v.common, the thread strips easy on the aluminium. or where people have over tightened.
