hi all, car is running nicely now and I am really enjoying it, I tried to get the aircon to work tho, I could only see one valve on the system near the dipstick hole, we charged the system thro that and system pumps, I can see liquid passing under the sight glass with no bubbles in it, but it has no effect on the temperature of the air blown into the car, any ideas anyone??

Thanks a lot

Brian

The coolant bottle, at the very front of the engine bay, at the passenger side needs to be topped up with water. I found out that as mine had a leak and was empty zero cold air came out.

which coolant bottle? the engine coolant? I am pretty sure all the levels are topped up as we changed rad and chacked it all after that, or is there another bottle for air con?

Thanks

Take it to kwik fit, flikz took his in and they do whats called an aircon service for £45, once they have done the service if there is no significant change they don't charge.

Remove the headlamp pannel and then as you stand infront of the car look down to your left. Just infront of the Recirc Valves bloted onto the main chasis leg. you'll find a alloy bottle about 7" tall with a connector on the top and an aircon feed and return.

any ideas what i fill the air con liquid bottle mentioned above with??

Thanks all

You can't, its a sealed container  That unit is the receiver drier for the aircon gas...

That gas is not good stuff to fook with anyway. Which is why it is sealed I suppose and why people make a good living out of just being auto aircon engineers.

Great for poisoning the neighbours with though

damn aircon, its doin my head in, wish i could get it workin tho, need it at the mo. bugger bugger bugger

Is it constantly blowing warm air no matter what the setting is?

  • Author

no it blows warm air on hot and then just outside temp air on cold but its certainly not chilled air

you may not have enough pressure in the system - does the air con pump activate? If not it could be that thats not working.

yep it does and it pumps cos i can see liquid passing the sight glass and it has no bubbles in either, its a mystery!!

Yep, this is what I did a couple of weeks ago. My aircon system was totally empty and hadn't worked for a couple of years.

Kwik-fit did their thing and all's well now.

They connect their machine and test the system for pressure. If it won't hold pressure it doesn't fill the gas and they don't charge (apparently).

I did have R134a gas in originally 'cos mine's a later car, so it was a straightforward job.

Takes about an hour.

Thats what my mate did, he said kwik fit actually changed a few small parts for new ones but the guy said there was little change so didn't charge him then halfway home the aircon starts blasting out freezing cold air and it didn't cost a penny. Still going strong.

How do I know if I have R134a gas? I have a 1990 model.

If I have the older gas, how expensive and how big of a job is changing it to the new gas?

1990 its very likely to be R12 (the old gas). Depends who you go to regards costs. It can be done for as little as £50 on top of the usual recharge but if you do a full on proper job about £200 plus normal recharge price.

HTH

is the system sound??? freons are one of the most penetrative vapours they WILL find leaks. Check around the system, compressor, condensor, tx v/v, evaporator.

I have the exact same problem with my Aircon (not needed at the moment)

I had mine regassed with R134, Made no difference.

It would be good to hear if and when you get yours sorted.

Cheers.

Pete.

mooch asked his question yesterday, which was the one I was answering ;-)
